Rich, coating, complex, and intriguing — and a killer story to boot.
Whyte & MacKay Blenders have been doing great work since the mid 1800s. They hire the most skilled blenders and contract rare and premium barrels of Whiskies — mostly from Scotland. They then do short-run, proprietary bottlings that are some of the best in the word. The list of their famous accomplishments is far too long to reprint here. But this Whiskey is a fine addition to the list.
Mackinlay's Shackleton Rare Old has an amazing story behind it. Noted Scottish Whisky collector Vijay Mallya got his hands on a case of Whiskey recovered from the famous Ernest Shackleton in 2007 — left trapped in Antarctic ice for more than one-hundred years. He shared a dram with Richard Patterson — master blander for Whyte & MacKay. The two then set out to recreate the flavor profile in a Scottish Whisky. It’s a remarkable story and a remarkable Whisky too. no, it’s more. It’s a Whisky masterpiece.
Appearance / Color
Golden Straw.
Nose / Aroma / Smell
Complex doesn’t begin to related the depth of flavor — from fresh-baked peasant bread and whipped butter to crushed apples and herbs.
Flavor / Taste / Palate
Viscous and mouth-coating — but light at the same time — with more autumn fruit, orange zest, butter-nut toffee, and more.
Finish
Rich with a strong finish that adds shortbread cookies to the flavor profile.
