A great grain-to-glass Rye Whiskey with a distinct flavor profile.

Laws Whiskey House has become a fixture on the Denver scene. It was founded in 2011 by Alan Laws when he quite-rightly fled the world of high finance and capital markets to put his life to better use making fine aged Spirits. Today their lineup includes three Bourbons, three Ryes, and six special edition fiddly things. Growth has been so strong that this small, craft distillery located in the Mile High City has achieved national distribution deals and come to the rapt attention of Whiskey fans and awards committee.

Their San Luis Valley Straight Rye Whiskey is a beautiful grain-to-glass Whiskey. They source sweet winter rye from the Cody Family Farm in the San Luis Valley. This means the rye grows at 8,000 feet above the sea in an arid and dry climate with dramatic temperature changes. Turns out, rye absolutely loves that. This makes for distinct and full-bodied flavors in this Whiskey with notes of orange peel, black tea, salted toffee, stewed fig, and sweet mint. Oh, and it’s aged for at least 3 years, which extracts even more bold flavors from the barrels.

This was so bad. Acrid, bitter, terrible. I dumped the rest of the pour it was that bad. Prior my worst in the whole advent calendar was a score -1. This was a -5 and trashed. Really, truly, a terrible whiskey.
