Located at a WWII repurposed aircraft hangar on Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay, Hangar 1 is fond of a good airplane reference and it was basically born because they wanted a straight, but not harsh, but still deep, but also perfectly balanced and even a slightly fruity Vodka. Founded in 2001 by Ansley Coale, the very same one who founded the legendary Germain-Robain Craft Distillers back in the 1980s, and St. George Spirits, Hangar 1 soon became an exclusive grape-based Vodka distiller. Today, it’s owned by Proximo Spirits of New Jersey and their myriad of offerings includes infused Vodkas and a Californian-French Brandy blend.
Hangar 1 Smoke Point Vodka was born one year after the devastating Napa Valley Glass Fire in Northern California. Joining forces with Crimson Wine Group, this is the first Vodka that’s made from smoke-tinged California Malber and Merlot grapes. This limited-edition offering is an experiment in terroir and sustainability and ALL proceeds from Smoke Point will be donated to the California Fire Foundation.
The taste? Unexpectedly bold with subtle notes of fruit, licorice, and allspice. This one can definitely stand on its own but it’s also versatile enough to spice up your favorite Vodka cocktail. Like a Smoke Point Martini, for example.
