A robust, twice-aged wonder-Bourbon bottled with Love in the heart of Texas.
We love all the hard-toiled, passionate, craft distillers of the world. But the Garrison Brothers stand out in that crowd a bit taller than most. You see, they don’t farm out anything. Every step from cooking the mash to bottling happens right there on site at their distillery in Hye, Texas. They make Bourbon in a range of ages and finishes, but it all started with the famous “barrel #6” that yielded their signature Texas Bourbon Whiskey.
First — and this is very important — you’ve got to look at that color. Garrison Brothers Balmorhea is a deep Mahogany. But it is also a Straight Bourbon Whiskey — and that mean that it has no artificial colors or flavorings added… none, zero, nada.
Here’s how they did it. They filled new, charred, standard-sized barrels from Minnesota with new-make Spirit and aged it for two years. Then they put it in different 27-gallon casks (smaller) from Louisville with a different variety of white oak and char and aged it an additional two years. This Whiskey got two sets of virgin casks before being bottled at near cask strength — 57.5% ABV. It wasn’t “finished”, it was actually aged twice in the Texas heat. It’s got all the flavor to match and that’s why it won Best American Micro Whiskey of the Year from Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.
I’m getting a bottle for myself, and you should too.
Smartass Corner:
Garrison Brothers Balmorhea was named after a natural spring and watering hole near the distillery that is a favorite of the crew at Garrison Brothers.
