Foursquare Distillery has delivered another wonderful Rum in their Exceptional Cask Series (get some).

The Seale Family has been living and working on Barbados for nearly 370 years. They started making Rum there in 1820, selling wholesale to distributors. Eventually they opened up their own distribution company, allowing them to market premium Barbados Rums under the R. L. Seale brand in the early 1900s. Since then they have developed a range of private brands including Doorly’s, E.S.A. Field, Rum 66, and Old Brigand — all distilled at their historic Foursquare Distillery located on a former sugarcane plantation in the southeast of the island.

A "Single Blended Rum" is a Spirit that has been distilled in different kinds of stills. In the case of Foursquare Single Blended Rum is the tenth in their series of Exceptional Cask Series (ECS) and is exceptional indeed. This perfectly lovely Caribbean dram is made from molasses and has been aged a full twelve years in ex-Bourbon casks — a LONG time in the Caribbean — and is bottled at cask strength of 59% ABV. And it is just so gash-darn tasty and smooth that we could sit all day and sip through a bottle of this with a few friends and call it a GREAT day.

Flavor Spiral TM
  • leather leather
  • tobacco tobacco
  • woody woody
  • papaya papaya

Nose / Aroma / Smell
With all that time in Bourbon casks you will expect aromas of vanilla and oak spice and it’s all there, along with marzipan and tobacco leaves.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
Old Rum takes on notes of leather and tobacco and they are there on the palate along with rich wood notes, papaya, banana, and a bit of chocolate.

Finish
The finish is medium length but very rich.

I actually am rating the 2008....

I actually am rating the 2008. Still, I hear they're very similar, and these tasting notes seem accurate funny enough. Leather isn't the main note but it does have a leathery 'dark' quality, a musty, dirty, taste/feel. Overall it's sweet with a spicy finish, I don't drink rum but this is the exception, almost like a good rye whiskey with some sherry cask scotch characteristics

I have recently been introduced to over-proofed rum, and I am loving it! I have picked up a few bottles and find them strong contenders to compete with the best bourbons for intense flavor. I recommend this highly.
