A delightful small batch Rye Whiskey that’s both approachable and strong enough to make the grade.

Heaven Hill Distillers is unique. They are one of the oldest and largest Bourbon distillers in the world, they have the second largest standing inventory of aging Bourbon, and they have grown to become the seventh largest supplier of Spirits in the US. BUT… they are still family owned. In fact, they are the only family-owned production house left in Kentucky. The Spirit brands owned and controlled by Heaven Hill includes Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, and their namesake Heaven Hill, and many dozens more.

For millions of fans, Elijah Craig is the their Kentucky dram of choice. Everything they do is small batch, meticulously crafted, and delicious. And so everyone was ecstatic when they added Rye Whiskey to their core line-up. Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Rye starts with a mash bill of 51% rye, 35% corn, and 14% barley. This mash bill is becoming a go-to standard for Kentucky-style Rye Whiskies. It is well aged and at 47% ABV it is smooth and approachable neat but strong enough to stand up to modern cocktails without losing its man-card. And it was good enough to receive a "Platinum Best of Class" honor at the 2020 SIP Awards.

Beginning at with ryes

I consider myself a 'brown' liquor lover. Pretty much any & all, though I have a particular affinity for scotch. On the other hand, I've never found a bourbon I've been totally satisfied with - sacrilege, I know. (I'm even a southerner.) Enter, rye. This is my first official foray into rye country (I've had it before, sure, but only in passing perhaps in mixed drinks), and I'm intrigued. On the initial nose fruit definitely came first, followed for me by a light mossy fragrance, then came the oak, and a faint whiff almost of basil, and a moment of cocoa which to be honest I had to search to find. The first taste was also fruit forward, then a bit of toffee, then some nutmeg followed by clove which then hit into pepper, which somewhat quickly disappeared and melted into a whisp of butterscotch. The finish has a moment of heat in the throat but then disappears into a lovely lingering warmth in the chest. After the first taste, the nose became intensely dominated by vanilla, and this remained true throughout several following tastes. ... I was a little hesitant about my first official rye being a "barely legal" one, but I think it's a good introduction. I already like it better than bourbon, and my next rye will definitely have a bumped up rye percentage as I continue the journey. Prost.
