Heavy peat smoke meets sweet dried fruit extravaganza.

As early as the 18th century, the Harvey family was a big player on the distilling map of the island of Islay, where they owned and operated several distilleries. In 1881, the three Harvey brothers – William, John, and Robert – received an inheritance; can you guess what they spent it on? Obviously, they opened a new state-of-the-art distillery on the island of Islay – Bruichladdich. Today, this producer of 1.5 million liters of the finest Scotch Whisky per year is owned by the French company Remy Cointreau, which totally explains their Wine-based approach that focuses on origin, terroir, traceability, and authenticity.

Fans of pushing the boundaries of Whisky laws, their Octomore line brings you heavily peated beasts. Octomore 12.3 is a single vintage, single field, single malt awesomeness that comes at you at 118.1 PPM. The 100% Islay-grown barley comes from Octomore Farm in Church Field just two miles from the distillery, where it’s harvested by friend and farmer James Brown. Now, 12.3 is a combo of two parcels that had taken two 5-year-long separate journeys before being married: 75% was aged in 1st fill American Whiskey casks and 25% in 1st fill Pedro Ximenez Sherry butts from Fernando de Castilla. Expect salty citrus marine notes to deliver strong Islay barley vibes while Pedro Ximenez brings you sweet dried fruit extravaganza to back up all that rich dry peat smoke.

This was my first Octomore, but my god is it good. It has incredible dark fruits with blackberry, figs, blackcurrants, toffee, tobacco leafs, and espresso notes in the taste. All of that is layered underneath this beautiful smoke note that is more of an in-between of Ardbeg meatiness and Highland Park earthy flavor. The mouthfeel is similar to maple syrup in its absurd richness and viscosity. It is a joy neat, but opens up the fruitiness even more with a drop of water. If you can grab it for retail of $280 I would contend it is absolutely worth that price.
