The distinct taste of Bruichladdich “terroir”.

As early as the 18th century, the Harvey family was a big player on the distilling map of the island of Islay, where they owned and operated several distilleries. In 1881, the three Harvey brothers – William, John, and Robert – received an inheritance; can you guess what they spent it on? Obviously, they opened a new state-of-the-art distillery on the island of Islay – Bruichladdich. Today, this producer of the finest Scotch Whisky is owned by the French company Remy Cointreau, which totally explains their Wine-based approach that focuses on origin, terroir, traceability, and authenticity.

Their Islay barley series is a proud showcase of “terroir” in single malt Whisky. The word might sound fancy, but the concept is very simple: the soil, climate, natural influences and local weather naturally leave their signature on the Whisky. The barley for the series is grown exclusively on farms around the island and everything from distilling to maturing and bottling screams Bruichladdich. And don’t forget the salty breeze, blowing on the edge of the Atlantic, leaving its mark.

Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2012 is a unique blend of barley, coming from 8 farms on the small island of Islay. Aged for 8 years in 75% fresh American oak and 25% refill French oak, this expression begins with Mauri and Kerry yeast strains and Islay spring water. It's non-chill filtered and color-free. Refined, complex, and creamy, you'll immediately recognise the iconic Bruichladdich fruity and floral style.

The way nodes of pear and hone...

The way nodes of pear and honey compliment a honey flavor is comforting and enjoyable. I would recommend it every time.

Cereal and light fruit are pro...

Cereal and light fruit are prominent on the nose with some slight briny essence in the background. Nice mellow fruitiness, creamy vanilla initially on the palate. Little bit of oak on the finish. Reminded me of cream soda or ginger ale as I sat with it. Very pleasant!

This embodies everything I lov...

This embodies everything I love about the unpeated offerings from Bruichladdich. Touches of oak, sweetness and still some phenols. Plus there’s the really enjoyable tobacco note well into the finish. Really dig the terroir exploration too.
