Nestled on the Isle of Islay, the land that laughs in the face of bland whisky, Ardbeg has been swaggering its smoky stuff for over 200 years. It’s the Michael Jordan of peat, winning titles like World Whisky of the Year more times than you’ve tried to pronounce "Islay" correctly. With a history as rich as its whiskies, Ardbeg prides itself on crafting the kind of single malts that make other bottles on your shelf green with envy. It’s not just a distillery; it’s a legend, bottling the essence of Islay one award-winning dram at a time.
Ardbeg Spectacular takes the stage as the first-ever Ardbeg aged in ex-porto casks, twirling in a tutu of sweet and peat in a ballet of flavors. It’s like if Scotch went on a gap year to Portugal and came back with stories you’d actually want to hear. After its porto escapade, it lounges in ex-Bourbon barrels, adding layers of richness and a wardrobe change to a more spectacular hue. Released on Ardbeg Day (June 1, 2024), this annual limited edition is the Ringmaster of Ardbeg Dark Circus, promising a showstopper of flavours that transforms the classic circus into a parade of peat and sweetness. Step right up to a performance where every sip is a standing ovation.
Appearance / Color
Cola brown.
Nose / Aroma / Smell
Initial sniffs bring forth a blend of salty, industrial smoke with undertones of cold metal and tobacco leaves. Earthy herbs and malt mingle with pear and lime cordial scents, grounded by a masculine peat base. Over time, aromas evolve to include Italian cured meat, crushed peppercorn, cardamom, and sugary spearmint, finishing with a hint of creamy nuttiness and caramel popcorn.
Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate presents a sweeter profile than the nose suggests, balanced with moderate dryness. Flavors of tinned strawberries and cranberries appear, complemented by persistent bonfire smoke now veiled beneath fresh orchard fruits and berry jam nuances. Unexpected notes of new leather and capers emerge, quickly giving way to the sweetness. Smoked malt, seasoned with a dash of sea salt, adds complexity.
Finish
A long, warming, and very dry finish characterizes the experience. Smouldering bonfire and lingering peat.
