A brilliant example of what twenty-five years in the wood does for premium Islay Single Malt.

In an age of Whisky start-ups, Ardbeg is refreshing blast from the past. They have been making Malt Whisky on the same site since 1798. The product was so popular that they ramped up production to commercial levels in 1815. That’s more than two-hundred years of Single Malt wonder. Like nearly all of her Islay sisters, Ardbeg is a peated dram. But Ardbeg is known for gentle smoky smoothness with the vast majority of production going into the world’s greatest Blended Scotches. But true Single Malt releases are in high demand and they consistently deliver.

Ardbeg has experimented with older special editions. They’ve had a handful of over-twenty year-old releases over just the last few years and they’ve briskly sold out. But now, for the first time, they are adding an older Spirit to its permanent core lineup and we are super-excited to see it.

Ardbeg 25 Years Old will still be a Single malt that is limited in supply because… well, there are not so many barrels that were laid down in the mid-1990s. But they promise us that this exceptional Islay dram is here to stay. This is a good thing because the signature smoky profile remains with a richness, balance, and complexity only superlative aging can deliver. The folks at Ardbeg call it "majestic" and it’s hard to disagree.

Appearance / Color
Warm Amber

Nose / Aroma / Smell
An incense-like aroma rises from the glass, filled with notes of brûlée cream, smoked pine resin, peppermint bark candy, winter bonfire, and banana’s foster.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate is creamy and complex, opening with chipotle, lemon curd, star anise, toffee, beach tar, and a hint of fudge.

Finish
The finish is impossibly long with a lingering smoked chili pepper note.

Bring the price to MSRP and I ...

Bring the price to MSRP and I might bite. At $1,220 this is a hard pass. This is 300-400 more than retail.
