A rich and complex Rum, perfectly aged and reflecting classic Trinidad influences.
Joe Farrell owns The Landing Guest House on Harbor Island, Bahamas. He started having a private-label wine made for his little business with a modern-designed logo of a beautiful Bahamian woman’s face and detailed headdress, which honors the first Miss Bahamas 1963. In 2008 he started bottling his own Rum blend to serve his guests as well. Soon, guest house visitors were requesting shipments of “that Rum with the Afro Head” to be shipped back home. Thus, a new business venture was born. It is available in both their original 7 and 15 year versions, both are really good.
Afrohead 7 year old original Rum is a blend assembled by Toby Tyler — the official “Rum Savant” of Afrohead. The molasses-base comes from across the West Indies — with a decided emphasis on the Dominican Republic — and are fermented, distilled, and aged for a minimum of seven years in Trinidad in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks. The unique strain of native Trinidad yeast is important to the process, bringing banana and toffee notes to the front.
Smartass corner:
Toby Tyler is a music industry veteran living in the Bahamas — writing songs and drinking Rum in his studio. When his friend Joe Farrell asked him what his favorite Rum was, he replied, “It hasn’t been made yet.” They collaborated to blend the first Afrohead Rum.
