Angel’s Envy Bourbon Review

Angel’s Envy might be the new kid on the bourbon block, but it’s already making waves. The distillery opened in 2016, right on Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville, and has been crafting incredible whiskey ever since.

Angel Envy’s bourbon stands out as some of the finest, but it doesn't stop there. Their Rye Whiskey? Equally impressive.

Angel’s Envy dares to be bold, and it shows. Bringing Owen Martin on board as Master Distiller in 2022 was a genius move. His expertise with secondary casks and limited-edition collections takes their bourbon to the next level.

This Angel Envy's Bourbon review covers everything you need to know about the brand—what it is, where to find it, and most importantly, what its bourbon tastes like.

Here’s a quick review of what makes this popular bourbon a must-try:

  • Classification: Bourbon

  • Tasting Notes: Vanilla, ripe fruit, toast, oak, maple syrup, and hints of bitter chocolate

  • Distillery: Angel’s Envy

  • Proof: 86.6 to 118.8

  • Pros: Great value, plenty of choices, sweet and spicy.

  • Cons: May be too sweet for those who prefer spicy bourbons, the amount of options can be overwhelming for someone new to bourbon whiskey.

What Is Angel's Envy Bourbon?

Angel’s Envy Bourbon is a bold, rich whiskey crafted right here in the United States. Like all great American Bourbons, it starts with a mash bill heavy on corn; then, it’s aged in charred oak barrels that are made in the U.S. to keep its bourbon status intact.

The aging process gives it a smooth, sweet balance of vanilla and caramel, perfectly mellowing the bold spices of a dark whiskey. The result is a superb bourbon that's perfect for sipping neat or with ice.

Angel’s Envy Bourbon is perfect for cocktails–just make sure it’s the key ingredient! Stick with classics like a Bourbon Old Fashioned. All you need is a twist of orange, a bit of sugar, and a splash of bitters to let that bold bourbon flavor really shine.

What Is the Alcohol Content of Angel’s Envy Bourbon

Angel’s Envy’s bourbon whiskey options can range from 86.6 proof (43.3% ABV) to 118.8 proof (59.4% ABV) for the cask-strength version.

Flavor Review: What Does Angel's Envy Bourbon Taste Like?

Most bourbons are a balanced mix of sweet and spicy, which is what bourbon lovers expect. But Angel’s Envy takes it up a notch.

Take the Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels, for example. It greets you with a nose of raisins, maple syrup, and a hint of vanilla that instantly draws you in. Then, that first sip delivers a perfect blend of sweet and spicy, with notes of vanilla, chocolate, ripe fruit, and so much more. It’s a whole new level of flavor in every drop.

But Angel’s Envy doesn’t stop there! The distillery also offers cask-strength bourbons that pack a serious punch. These bottles still have those signature flavor notes everyone loves, but with an extra kick.

Coming in at just under 119 proof (59,5% ABV), their cask-strength bourbons are perfect for sipping on a cold night, warming you right up and chasing the chill out of those bones.

How Should You Drink Angel’s Envy Bourbon?

Enjoying Angel’s Envy Bourbon is easy. Sip it neat, with a splash of water, or on the rocks. No need to complicate things with extra ingredients, as its natural flavor does all the work. Whether you like it warm or cold, it's all about your preference, though heating it up isn’t the best choice.

As mentioned above, Angel’s Envy makes an amazing Old Fashioned. Just add simple sugar, bitters, and ice to let the bourbon shine. If you’re opting for the cask-strength version, those subtle ingredients help tone down the higher proof.

Is Angel's Envy a Good Bourbon?

Based on our review and taste tests, Angel’s Envy Bourbon is a fantastic whiskey, especially for the price. While it’s not as pricey as some of the more well-known brands, its port wine barrel aging gives it a flavor that rivals top-tier options–sometimes even better. Given the value, we can’t recommend Angel’s Envy enough.

What makes Angel’s Envy stand out is the variety. Whether you’re into cask strength, their signature options, or the classic flagship bourbon, there’s something for everyone.

Angel’s Envy Bourbon VS. Angel’s Envy Rye?

Angel’s Envy Bourbon and Angel’s Envy Rye are the brand’s top choices, and both are fantastic. The difference? It really comes down to personal preference. The Bourbon is mellow and a little sweet.

Rye Whiskey, on the other hand, brings more spice than sweetness. This is true for both Angel’s Envy Bourbon and Rye, so it’s all about what flavor you’re in the mood for. Whether you go sweet or spicy, you can’t go wrong!

It's missing some basic things...

It's missing some basic things (spice and heat) that I really think bourbon should have. Just a tad on the unbalanced side for me. There are plenty of bourbons that are worse. If you like the sweeter things in life, or if you enjoy port wine, by all means pick this up. At the price point, it's a steal for a well-constructed experiment. Personally, it's sweetness is too cloying, and while it does a neat trick – it's a trick that more and more distilleries are starting to get the hang of and (in my opinion) are executing better.
