One of our favorite Single Malts ever aged in ex-Bourbon barrels and rare Tokaji Wine for a rich, cake-like profile.
Located near Tain on the east coast of the northern Highlands, the Glenmorangie Distillery was founded in 1843 when the Matheson brothers converted the Morangie farm into a distillery by the sea. At a full twenty-six feet in height, the stills are the tallest in Scotland — ensuring that only the lightest vapors make it to the top and resulting in a smooth, fresh, and elegant range of fine Single Malt Whiskies. Now owned by LVMH, Glenmorangie is THE best selling Single Malt Whisky in Scotland and the rest of the UK, and one of our personal favorites.
Glenmorangie is one of our favorite distilleries in Scotland. We have stories to tell, but those are best left for another time. Anyway… Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake is still the same Glenmorangie that we all know and love — same barley, same yeast, same amazingly tall stills. And like all special Glenmorangie releases this cake-y Single Malt is aged first in ex-Bourbon casks. But then it’s transferred into rare Tokaji Wine casks from Hungary. This Wine is famous for its sweet, raisiny character. And the influence of the barley, the Bourbon, and the Tokaji on the Single Malt reminded Dr. Bill Lumsden — Director of Whisky Creation — of upside down cake. And EVERYONE loves cake… especially when it’s bottled at a perfect 46% ABV.
Smartass Corner:
Tokaji or Tokay Wines come from a Wine-growing region that spans eastern Hungary and Slovakia. They are all sweet and range from dry to Grappa-like must versions. The grapes have been infected with "noble rot," the beneficial Botrytis fungus that "raisins" ripe grapes, giving the Wine a sweet, Sherry-like quality.
