One of the most sought-after limited edition annual releases from a Japanese master.

The best description we’ve ever heard about Ichiro Akuto is that he’s the "Rock Star of Japanese Whisky." While the other heavyweight executives of Japan’s thriving distilling industry can walk around Spirit conferences in obscurity, Ichiro Akuto gets mobbed by fans. With good reason. His family owned the legendary Hanyu Distillery for generations and when they sold the business, Ichiru held on to the standing inventory and issue special releases for years — including the famous "Playing Cards" series that made him famous. He has used those proceeds to craft new flavorful blends and other tasty offerings.

Ichiro's Malt & Grain World Blended Whisky is a bit of an enigma. The exact components of this annual limited release gem are kept secret, but there appears to be a lot of local, Chichibu Distillery Spirit with enough outside elements to craft the flavor profile Ichiro was looking for. It is — obviously — a combination of Single Malts and grain Whiskies married at the Chichibu Distillery, but all that you will notice is the lovely flavor profile, delicate texture, and spot-on 48% ABV.

Japanese Single Malts, like Scotch, are double-distilled in pot stills. Grain Whiskies, on the other hand, are distilled in column stills.

Tasting Notes

Appearance / Color
Warm Amber

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aromas of peach and apricot cobbler, lemon zest, and granola waft over creamy toffee.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate has vanilla and toffee up front with tropical fruit, pepper, and lemon grass on the back of the tongue.

The finish is medium length with more tropical fruit and lingering butterscotch notes.
Ratings & Reviews
Vanilla note was subtle and smooth...
It’s a light, tangy scotch. A nice evening in Tokyo.
Lovedddd this one, sooo good. If it wasn't the same price as a Kitchenaid Mixer I would totally get it!
Really smooth, unique, and full taste that fills your mouth right when you take a swig. Tried it through a taster and would buy a bottle if it weren’t ~$275 in my area. Would likely buy if it were <=$100. The flavor profile seems like a good portrayal.
