A complex yet approachable Irish Single Malt.

Glendalough is Gaelic for "valley of two lakes" and if you ever get to visit the small town of Glendalough, you will find just that. A beautiful hamlet in eastern Ireland with two lovely lakes nearby. If you are ever fortunate enough to visit this idyllic spot, you will also find the first new craft distillery in Ireland since… well, a gosh darn long time.

Founded by "five friends from Wicklow and Dublin," they began their journey creating Poitín — a traditional Irish distillate made in very small pot stills (sort of like small batch Irish Moonshine). From there it was a short and easy step into a variety of Irish Whiskies and Herbal-infused Gins as well. Everything is made by hand with a good measure of love.

Triple-distilled, Glendalough 7 Year Old Mizunara Finish Single Malt Whiskey is crafted from 100% Irish malted barley. It’s first aged for 7 years in Bourbon casks to get all those smooth, sweet, and bright layers. Then, it’s transferred into a leve 3 charred Mizunara 500-liter puncheon where it stays for up to a year. This adds depth to this fantastic Irish Single Malt along with notes of dark chocolate, sandalwood, cinnamon, and orange to the palate where flavors of citrus, orchard fruits, and biscuity malt are already mingling around. Perfection. Sip neat.

An interesting whiskey. Sanda...

An interesting whiskey. Sandalwood shavings dominate the nose. Citrus and chocolate notes feature prominently on the palate. More chocolate and cloves on the finish.

I found the chocolate notes to be of the bitter dark chocolate variety. That’s not my preference.

I paid $80 on Flaviar and would say that’s just right/a bit high.
