Masataka Taketsuru knew a good thing when he tasted it. Who’s he? Only the founder of Yoichi Distillery. Considered a hero in the Whisky universe, he studied Whisky production in Scotland back in the 1920s before returning to Japan to build Yoichi.
His location of choice? The north island of Hokkaido, an area which he felt closely mirrored the natural environment of Scotland.
Yoichi possesses its own cooperage and is particularly careful when selecting its barrels. Known as Hogshead, the barrels are made on-site using new oak. Yoichi produces a big, oily Spirit, in the Highland style.
And after winning Whisky Magazine’s "Best of the Best" in 2001, people were rightfully put on notice.
