It’s a pure, perfectly-aged Rum experience.
Dupré Barbancourt was a Frenchman from the Charente — one of France’s prolific Cognac-producing regions. At that time, Haiti was a French colony. Heck… French is still the official language. Anyway, it was considered the land of opportunity for young Frenchmen at the time, and Dupré immigrated there and learned about Rum. He founded his distillery the following year in 1862. In all the time since then, the distillery has never been outside of family hands — pretty cool, huh?
Back in 2010, there was the Great Haitian Earthquake. The disaster cost them two employees, a few of their older buildings, and hundreds of barrels of prime aging Rum. Production was quickly restored and this national pride — and number one export — came roaring back. Today, Rhum Barbancourt produces a full range of Rums. From premium aged to white, from spiced to fruit-infused… if you are a Rum-loving pirate at heart, they have a bottle for you.
Rhum Barbancourt Estate Reserve 15 is the definition of a “sipper.” You can mix it in a Daiquiri, but why would you? How many 15 YO Rums are there? Not many! This sugarcane beauty — not molasses based — is best poured neat and savored slowly. And they import new French Limousin oak casks for the job. So while some older Rums have a Bourbon-like aroma from used casks, the Estate Reserved 15 tastes like Rum perfectly aged in premium oak and nothing else.
Don’t get us wrong. Previously used barrels are awesome. Ex-Bourbon and Wine casks are used to great effect and are a big reason we have so much variety in the spirits world. But buyers of Rhum Barbancourt Estate Reserve 15 are looking for a more pure Agricole Rhum experience and it really works for them.
