Winter Warmer You Should Try: Orange Jam With a Bourbon Twist

Winter Warmer You Should Try: Orange Jam With a Bourbon Twist

When it's cold and moody outside, nothing beats the smell of freshly baked food filling the house. But you can forget about this being the smell of homemade cookies, as we’ve got something much better for you.

Why's it better? Because you get to add your favorite Bourbon to it, of course: it's our easy-to-make orange jam with Bourbon that's guaranteed to win you praise!

Ingredients

You'll probably already have most of the ingredients you need in your kitchen and there's no fancy chef equipment needed for this one either. To fill half a dozen 2 dcl pots with this yummy jam, all you'll need is:

1 kg organic oranges (with peels not chemically treated)
2 lemons
1.5 l water
0.75 kg sugar
6-8 dcl of the spirit of your choice

Ok, we know this might sound like a lot of alcohol, but most of it will evaporate off to leave just the great taste behind, so no skimping!

Spirit selection (our favorite part)

We tested out the recipe with Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel and the results were so good there is none left (sorry!). But before we go sharing our recipe with you, let’s get your spirit-discovery sensors thinking outside of the... eh... box containing a bourbon bottle.

If you happen to have some mid-range Rum gathering dust in your emergency drinks cupboard, this might just be its time to shine. Naturally, if you go for a Rum of a more noble nature, the result will be even better. The taste of Rum together with oranges might remind you of Pyrat Rum and its distinctive orange flavor.

If Cognac in your jam gets the taste buds gushing, our choice would be Davidoff Classic with its bouquet of vanilla, honey, and spices.

Tequila is another good option, which with a sprinkling of cinnamon is a classic combo needing no further explanation.

Cooking the jam

So, now that you’ve made your choice of spirit, here's how you get to your jam:

Step 1

Wash the oranges and lemons and cut into halves. Carve them out with a spoon and remove all the seeds.

Step 2

Add 0.5 liter of cold water to the carved out fruit and cook on a medium heat until it thickens, which should take around 15 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat. Use a second pot to boil 1 liter of water, then add the orange peels and cook them for 20 minutes until they become soft.

Step 3

Rinse the peels and leave them to cool down slightly. Then cut them into very thin slices, add the sugar, stir thoroughly, return to the stove and cook slowly to dissolve the sugar. And now, the most important step of the process comes into play: when it starts to boil, add your spirit and then continue cooking on a low heat for another 5 minutes.

Step 4

Use a blender to mix the carved out oranges and lemons, add them to the peels and stir. Remove pot from the heat and check if your jam is ready by placing a teaspoon of it on a cold plate. It should immediately start to become firm. If it remains runny, cook for another 5 minutes and then repeat the test.

Step 5

While the jam is still hot, pour it into sterilized glass jars and seal them tightly. Turn them upside down and leave them to rest until the jam is completely cold.

You now have jam that can be a very special Christmas gift, but after all your efforts why not organize a jam crowdtasting with your friends over weekend breakfast? And here’s a secret serving suggestion: add a few drops of spirit on top of your jam - success guaranteed!
