A pristine Grappa from the picturesque Tyrol mountains.

Imagine a picture-perfect image of an idyllic mountain village, crystal clear stream running behind the local church, backdropped by blooming meadows and snowy white mountains. No, this isn't a scene from The Sound of Music, although it might as well be. It is, however, the backdrop of the renowned Zu Plun distillery. Located in the picturesque Dolomites this Italian distillery makes Gins, Rhums, Liquours, and Grappas using local ingredients found in the surrounding mountains. The distillery itself is a part of an Alpine farmstead Plunhof, which in the past was part of the land properties of the Hauenstein Castle and was therefore owned by no less than poet Oswald von Wolkenstein. The Spirits produced there resonate the stern mountain environment and are, as the master distiller Florian Rabanser puts it, just like his handshake: strong and vigorous.

Zu Plun Plum Brandy is made exclusively of typical plums of South Tyrol farms, which are grown directly by Plunhof at about 1100 m altitude. The plum growth in this climate is affected by strong temperature oscillations, so the fruits grow small and compact, with a more concentrated aroma. The fruits are handpicked, carefully mashed, naturally fermented, and distilled twice for a smoother experience.

Brandy was invented in the 16th century by a sneaky Dutch merchant who learned how to remove water from Wine and save cargo space. He then added water again and called it “Bradwijn”, which means “burned wine”.
Brandies can help digestion, so they are perfect after meals. They were and are still considered medicine. Basically, any fruit that can be fermented can be distilled and turned into Brandy.
Nevertheless, the best Brandies are required to preserve the concentrated flavor of the used fruit.
