Beautiful Bourbon cask Whisky from Taiwan.
The Nantou Distillery may not be a household name in Europe or the US, but it's pretty big in Taiwan. The state-owned manufacturer of tobacco and alcohol established it in 1978, but it took three full decades before first Whisky came out of their stills. They use their own German mash tun and washbacks and boast four Forsyths stills. The climate in Taiwan is hot and humid, which means the angels are able to steal around five percent of Spirit each year. Nantou's most famous brand is Omar, but they also make the Yushan Signature range, which is a tribute to the highest mountain in Taiwan.
This curious Taiwanese Whisky was matured in ex-Bourbon casks before being bottled at 46%. The nose opens with honey, vanilla and peaches, introducing us to a pleasant and spicy palate with notes of smooth caramel, vanilla and lime. The world of Whisky in Taiwan is interesting and innovative, with Kavalan leading the way. We expect great things from Nantou.
