This is the best scotch that we are not allowed to call scotch. I remember getting this first bottle for around $60, and now i am lucky to find it for $300. Even among the other Japanese whiskies, this one stands out.
I had the pleasure of trying this last night and noticed immediately how fruity and smooth in went down, very subtle smoke on the finish too but overall an easy sipping scotch. The taste could have been slightly influenced from the fact that I had two peat forward scotches before this, nevertheless it was a good one to end on.
Had this few times in Japan and got me headed down the whisky trail which ultimately lead me here to Flaviar. 12 yo is my go to... I pick up the 18 yo Narita whenever it’s available and enjoy that on special occasions! Awesome nose, taste and finish! One o& the best!
Had this at the Multnomah Whiskey Library and was very pleased with it. Subtle sweet oak and spice followed by some mellow vanilla and caramel flavors. Nice long finish and very smooth. I think this one makes my top 5 list.
Wow…love the coconut and butter taste...a hint of berries…long finish…really complex…just wow. Outstanding. The hardest part is the self restraint to avoid drinking it too fast since it was so hard to find.
My special occasion whiskey. Tough to find a bottle but worth it. I was fortunate enough to recently get a bottle and have two bars nearby that each have one as well. Smooth, a little sweet, a little smoke, balance, pure zen.
It is an outstanding, balanced, whisky from the Yamazaki distillery matured in Puncheon casks,. A Hoggie will hold 230 liters, whereas the mighty Puncheon holds 480 liters. What this means for this Yamazaki single malt Japanese whisky is that it matures in the Puncheon slower, allowing it to gently acquire flavor from the cask. It has a birth with note of strawberry, elderflower, sandalwood, vanilla bean, caramel a hint of buttered rye bread, grass & white peach; while life adds notes of pineapple, sultana, plum, floral oak, a hint of cigar box & fudge; that leads to a long & warming death with notes of white grape, green apple, pear, barley & a hint of spicy cinnamon.
It is an outstanding, rich NAS Single Malt Japanese Whisky that combines multiple single malt vintages that have been matured in a variety of casks with some of it having been aged for over 20 years. It has a bitter sweet birth with notes of sherry, matured strawberry, melon, cream & oak; while life adds notes of dried fruit, persimmon, mandarin & chocolate; that leads to a long & spicy death with notes of walnut, wood, dates, raisins & prunes.
It is an outstanding, balanced, limited-edition, NAS single malt expression from Japan. It has a rich birth with notes of sherry & port; while life adds notes of strawberry, fruit & vanilla; that leads to a death of medium length with notes of rye, plum, cinnamon & apple.
It is an outstanding, delicate, NAS Japanese Single Malt Whisky that has a sweet birth with notes of fruit, citrus, melon, port, sherry & a touch of honey; while a rich life adds notes of vanilla custard, citrus, banana, chestnut & fire; that leads to a long & balanced death with notes of fruit, honey, woody, phenols, pine & salt.
This is a really nice whiskey. It has all of the characteristics of a masterfully crafted whisky, including a smoothness and a long finish. I associate the finish more with coffee than dark chocolate and oak, but that's a good thing. Unfortunately, I do not think it lives up to the hype and current price. If I happened upon a bottle at half or even 2/3 the price, I'd jump on it, but that's just me. If you can afford the current ask, this is one to add to your collection.
