In 1869, the Ripy Brothers started distilling on Wild Turkey Hill near Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The namesake product became their number one seller and the name of the distillery was changed to reflect that success. The Ripy Family sold the distillery in 1952, and then the normal rounds of mergers and acquisition occurred. Campari Group out of Italy owns them now and they produce a wide range of Bourbons under the very popular Wild Turkey name along with several other brands.
Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, formerly known as Turkey 81, was released as a replacement for the iconic Turkey 80 – to say it had big shoes to fill is an understatement. But filled them it did. Aged for 6-8 years on average in new American oak with char#4, it clocks in at a slightly higher proof of 81. This one’s very much appreciated in the mixology crowd, so don’t be afraid to mix it up in a craft cocktail, but be sure this classic Borubon can perfectly stand on its own, too.
