Member Reviews and Ratings of WhistlePig PiggyBack Rye
Jake,
Fairly average but good, I don't mind picking it up and having a glass but it's nothing spectacular.
guest,
Average and it’s all just the name. I’ve had better spending less
David,
Relatively smooth for a rye. I too bourbon-esque for my taste as I am a malt person . I would suggest it as a compliment to the shelf if for nothing else but the name .
Otto,
Average. Nothing spectacular, but drinkable.
Ben,
I love Piggyback! One of the best ryes you can get for the money.
guest,
sweet apple cinnamon spiced rye
Chris,
Nice balanced rye
Christopher,
Felt like this was smoother and more complex than Old Elk Rye
guest,
Very flavorful with just a bit of a bite. Warm, caramel notes
William,
Not fan of rye
David,
Very interesting whisky. I like the smooth flavor.
David,
Lovely. A great first Rye for the wife and I. We both enjoyed its smoothness, flavor, and finish. Best, we found, with one cube of ice to help open the nose and taste a bit.
John,
My first rye I like and loved it!!
Mike,
Tasty. A little expensive for the rye that it is. Want to try an older version.
Emilio,
Nice Rye, enjoyable straight for those who prefer it that way. Have yet to try mixing it, but I'm sure would make a good cocktail as well.
Ronald,
The leather taste hung on too long
Timothy,
Being a Rye Lover, this young porker is as nice as fresh bacon of the grill. It is young, but has a mature body and hits farther back on the pallet and warms you to the belly. Knowing what I know now, I will have to purchase one of the Single Barrell Bourbons of WhistlePig.
It would be Blasphemous for this to be used in any mixture other than clean air, for those who like it on the rocks, or those who might put a droplet of spring water.... other than that.. OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!
Nikhil,
Nice spice, not too grassy.
George,
Very smooth Rye with strong hints of vanilla. Easy sipping...
Doug,
Better than expected. Didn’t last long. Good cocktail bourbon.
Phil,
WhistlePig 6 Year Piggyback Rye, a 100% rye whiskey, their intro-level rye before you dive in to their premium offering (and by premium offering, you can get a decent bottle from this distillery in less than $100). This bottle was very affordable and I found them at Costco. However, most of the WhistlePig I purchase were the 10 year expression. The 6 years hits you with the sweet on your nose (caramel/vanilla), and then the rye spice. On the palate, it has big spice (burn baby burn), fruity (apple/peach?), vanilla, and hints of chocolate (I assume this is from the rye). The lingering rye is straight forward. This is a decent bottle, but I would rather spend just a tad more and go straight for the 10 year expression. Is this a nice bottle? for sure, but you can get a more complex/bold/interesting expression at the 10 year aged statement and they are not that much more expensive. I can see this be a good mixer or straight depends on the day/time/weather.
Frank,
I'm a scotch and bourbon drinker, but this was great. I really liked it which is good neat or on the rocks.
Forrest,
I did not like this offering. It fails on so many levels. It is not worth $50 a bottle and there are $20 bottles that kick its teeth in. Love WP 10 & 12...but not this one.
George,
Not for me. Forced to take this bottle in my membership. My son in law enjoyed it...
Bryan,
If you’re not a “rye person”, don’t leave a crappy review for a rye. I AM a rye person and think is a great example. Great combo of bite and not too much sweetness. Perfect with a large cube.
Jeff,
It was definitely a rye, which is not a favorite. I am mostly a fan of simple american sour mash whiskey and some bourbons. It seems that all of the whiskey choices provided to me by Flaviar involve rye and single malts / scotch, which I simply do not like.
James,
Good entry level Whistle Pig bottle. I'm not always a $100 a bottle guy so this one had all the same high standards at a lower price.
Jeffrey,
Smoot.
Bryan,
Whistlepig is our favorite Rye. So smoooooth and delicious.
W.,
Smooth. Nice taste with a clean finish, in my opinion. I have it neat.
bill,
spicy and smooth, makes a nice cocktail.
guest,
Great daily with mouthful of toffee and caramel and hints of peanuts and tobacco
Jeffree,
Awesome taste and shared with son and son in law - we all enjoyed!
Scott,
Not worth the price, for a few dollars more WhistlePig 10 is a far better product.
Ben,
Good with Black Cherry seltzer and bitters. Good. Classic. Easy.
Mike,
Smooth finish, but not as much flavor as I expected.
Wayne,
Never had anything with this much flavor !
Chris,
I generally am not a Rye person but this was tasty.
Patrick,
Happy with selection
Eric,
Last night I started with this rye (on ice), then Willet 4 year Rye, then Wild Turkey 101 Rye, then Angel's Envy Rum Cask Finished Rye. I was surprised that I liked the PiggyBack a little better than the Willet! The WT101 was exactly as expected (not nearly as refined, but tolerable) as was the Angel's Envy (syrupy sweet). For the price, this is be my go-to Rye!
gary,
Being the first expression released without Dave, this whiskey has proved to be both delicious neat and versatile enough to make a breath taking cocktail. If the spice is overpowering to a less experienced palate add ice, it really helps to open up the hidden notes of citrus rind and leather that may be masked from the spice of the rye
David,
I am not a rye guy did not like this one, not a smooth drink even with ice.
Maureen,
My palate may be unique but for me there was a mildew like quality to the Whistlepig that I did not enjoy.
GLEN,
I really liked this rye It was best for me on ice had a very good after taste.
Shane,
I am not usually a rye guy but this whiskey may have me reconsidering. Not as smooth as a good Irish but it tastes a bit spicy by comparison and was the smoothest rye I have had.
Frank,
The is an amazing bottle from start to finish and it didn’t last that long!
Smooth down with little bite back. A fully flavored yet not overpowering taste coupled with a rich aroma sets this one in front of a few others I hold in very high regard.
I’ve had other spirits from this same brand and not one has disappointed yet!
John,
When I was younger, I was a Rye and Ginger guy but that always meant Seagrams. A few years ago, I attended a Whisky Live event in NYC and tasted a rye there that was just awful. PiggyBack came recommended so I gave it a try and I am very pleased with it. A little bit sweet, but not displeasing. I will likely buy it again.
Robert,
Nose:leather, tobacco, caramel. Taste: light licorice, smooth pepper spice, mint. Bought this to try a 100% rye. It's definitely different than a bourbon. I kinda liked a lot about it, but wasn't really my jam. Will probably try another rye down the line. This seems a little bit too expensive for me.
Tom,
Very nice
Tom,
Loved them they were all very smooth
Keith,
Great whiskey for most anytime.
Jeffrey,
First bottle from membership and it was a winner. On the sweet side but still smooth. I will purchase it again.
Jeff,
excellent flavor IMO. Nice spice balanced with some sweetness. smooth long finish. very enjoyable for me
Gregg,
I've never been much of a Rye guy but I have to say that my mind has been changed.
WILLIAM,
my first bottle sent to me with gifted Flavair membership and have to say I really enjoyed it. It was smooth and just kept getting smoother sitting around the fire. Will definitely order again, a nice rye that has earned a spot on the shelf!!
Michael,
First bottle with Flaviar membership gifted by family. Tasted with a friend and really enjoyed it. Compared with tasting set and other Ryes, it was by far the best. Will order again
Jonathan,
Too sweet
Josh,
Taste good! Basically a wannabee Gentleman Jack that gives you heartburn! I wouldn't order this again.
Joseph,
Too sweet for my tastes. I would not have ordered if left up to me. It was sent automatically as part of a subscription I was gifted.
Larry,
Loved it and ordered it again
Charles,
I love the entire Whistle Pig line of bourbon. While this is a nice one, the 10 year is much better and the 12 year old Old World is amazing. If you like a more interesting unique wood experience, get the Old World. Caramel, vanilla, and Dark chocolate, are prevalent in this wonderful bourbon.
Jerry,
I’m not a huge whiskey fan but this one may change that!
Philip,
Absolutely Loved It! It is high on my list for replenishment.
Hessler,
Really nice and flavorful. Served over ice.
Jessie,
It’s a great mixer!!
Denison,
i typically like a straight bourbon and haven't tried a rye in quite some time. pleasantly surprised. nice over ice.
Scott,
Meh. An OK rye with light grass and hay on the nose. A bit hot. Thumbs up on the age stmt. but too many better NAS ryes available for less $. Won't buy again.
Darren,
Not a fan of the whisky
Brian,
Was a very Good Rye Bourbon, smooth with a lot of flavor!!
Robert,
Have had a few ryes before but this is a contender. Smooth, flavorful, a bit hot on the finish and worth trying more than once.
Robert,
Give it 7 stars
Rich,
.
Rich,
This is my first bottle through Flaviar. I really enjoyed it, smooth finish with complex notes. I would consider another product from this distiller.
John,
Great flavor, smooth burn. Would absolutely recommend!
Jack,
loved it!
Earl,
To the best of my knowledge, in my 58 years on this earth, I had never had a rye whiskey before Whistle Pig. I was a little disappointed to find out through my Father’s Day present, a Flaviar membership, that I had no choice on the first full bottle selection and to boot, it was not something I had said I liked in my profile. However, all that being said, when it arrived I dove right in and was utterly impressed. I don’t have anything to compare it to, thus the 7 star rating, but when I do I’ll be sure to re-rate and give my more educated opinion. I felt it was smooth, very flavorful, and enjoyable to the palate.
Robert,
Smooth and tasty!
Jeff,
Good bourbon. Smooth. I'd buy again.
Mike,
Good , long flavor with medium burn for a rye.
Capt.,
As a scotch drinker, mostly Johnny Black, I was a bit apprehensive about trying a rye. But I will say I was glad I did. This has a hint of smoke and caramel like a scotch. But a nice sweetness as a finish. Will definitely do this again.
Richard,
One of my favorites I've tried so far.
Stieler,,
Very Spicy. Almost like jet fuel. Have had lots of other bourbon's with a much smoother finish. Koval was very good. Bib and Tucker is excellent as well. This, not so much.
Todd,
liked a lot, went down smooth. very good finish!!
Douglas,
ok
Frank,
Very smooth with a great finish.
Joe,
Tastes cheap. Does not go down easy. Definitely not going to buy this again
Tobin,
I was pleasently surprised. Very smooth to my taste, didnt find it spicy like other ryes. If someone was new to rye, I think Whistlepig would be a great place to start.
Stewart,
Too much alcohol, lots of burn to drink neat. Use need to use in Old Fashion
Chris,
Delicious!!!
Carol,
Too much burn. The alcohol content overrides any subtleties of flavor. Not my sort of whiskey. Even letting it sit out for a few minutes do not smooth it for me.
Mike,
Very spicy, difficult to drink neat. Works very well for Old Fashioneds.
Brad,
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this rye, but thought I’d try it. Wow! I love it! This will be the rye of choice for my Manhattans going forward. Goes well over ice too.
Eugenio,
not my taste, too spicy
Douglas,
I liked it, smooth and not too harsh.
Christopher,
I really liked this Rye. Smooth....hint of caramel. Excellent really.
Neal,
Loved it. Made the best Sazerac!
David,
Excellent flavor. On the rocks with lemon twist is my new sipping favorite.
Jason,
Love it. Got it with the membership and have really enjoyed it since!
SCOTT,
I thought it was good but had a bite that wasn't for me. Just my personal taste but solid otherwise. I would definitely recommend to friends.
Tony,
Enjoyed it
Lee,
Had a bad after taste
Natt,
Appropriately named Piggy as in Pig swill.
Craig,
You can get a tastier rye whiskey for less; Old Forester, for instance.
Russell,
I don't care for rye so I'm not sure why it was sent to me based upon my initial selections. Oh well, I suppose if you dig rye, this one might do it for you.
Josh,
I know whats the science behind telling them what you like and they send you something you don't like.
Jami,
Loved it, one of the most smooth rye's I have had. If you want to make an amazing old fashioned, I highly recommend using this to really elevate your old fashioned. It is also terrific as a pour. Very smooth, full of flavor. Just the right amount of spice, not overpowering like most rye's I have had. This will continue to be a staple in my home bar!
Keith,
I liked all three of the sample pack
Keith,
Enjoyed it, I am a single malt guy but like a good rye
Keith,
Enjoyed it much
Keith,
I like a good rye and I was impressed with this one
Christopher,
Loved this blend, nice and smooth definitely a regular for my bar
Glen,
Saving it for later
Daniel,
smooth, but not for me
Matt,
Was average. Strong cinnamon/ spicy flavor, which I am not a fan of. I would not try again.
Matthew,
Love the rye!
Jason,
One of the better rye whiskey’s I have tasted.
Randy,
Great Rye Whiskey…...great nose, smooth on the tongue with a hint of cinnamon at a very reasonable price point!
David,
My son and I enjoyed it very much, I like it best on the rocks
Chris,
Not a huge rye fan to begin with and this did not help. Not much flavor in my opinion. Will not try again.
Thomas,
Piggy Back Rye straight is wonderfully aromatic and flavorful. Spicy but never too much. Smooth finish. Couldn't ask for a better sip
Tom,
First tried straight, not great BUT when used with many forms of Manhattens it's great. tried with several different vermouths, all great.
Nicholas,
Very enjoyable rye. This got me started with ryes and continues to be a solid choice. Bold and spicy, but with great flavors on the pallet and finish.
ADAM,
A bit spicy in taste, works really well in a whiskey sour.
Lance,
Probably not a bad Rye. I'm just not a fan of Rye.
William,
Very Smooth and unoffensive. Would have gotten a higher score if there was a richer/deeper flavor.
Jonathan,
I was unsure of this as I had never tried rye before and I had heard some things. The vanilla is the most prevalent aroma and flavor for me. It gets better with one or two ice cubes I think. I also discovered it goes really well in coke.
William,
I enjoyed this rye whiskey. Smooth at first sip with nice edginess on the finish.
Evan,
I m not a fan of this. I can’t tell if it is the flavor profile or how it sits in my mouth. Prob won’t order again but I am glad I tried it
Bud,
Great base flavor. Im not much of a Rye guy but this doesn't bite as much as other Ryes. Its worth a try.
Arturo,
I did not like this Rye. It has to much sweetness almost cinnamon.
Alan,
We definitely noticed a sharp taste compared to our usual Glennmorange. Assuming that's partly due to the 6 year age difference. We felt the need to add a few more drops of water than normal to mellow it out a bit. Would not be my first choice when purchasing.
Nicholas,
I found this to be a very good drink over ice. The aroma is that of minty vanilla and dill. The taste is light, but with flavors of licorice, ginger and a honey sweetness. The flavors don't have to smack you in the face to be complex. In full disclosure, I am a bourbon drinker and found this to be a refreshing change of taste. I will be trying other Rye Whiskeys after this experience.
Jeffrey,
I liked this a lot.
Mark,
Too harsh for my taste
Robert,
Not a great fan of this rye.
Amon,
Very smooth
John,
Not a fan. Lacks complexity. Seems like I've had it before, but I don't remember - why would I? I think I know from where the name comes: "Wheeeewwww, that's a pig!"
Kerry,
I am a single malt fan, however I enjoyed the PiggyBack Rye and so did my sons!!
Louis,
Did not order. Must have been sent by mistake. Do not drink Rye. Never opened.
David,
This is my first god-damned experience with Rye. Ever. So, you'll forgive me for drinking it like I'd drink my scotches, motherfuckers, but that's just how I roll, ok? OK.
First things first: I dropped one, normal-sized ice cube into my tumbler. Not one of those big, honking, scare-the-bejeezus-out-of-you cubes that seem so fashionable now. Fuck that. Simple and easy. Poured enough of the Whistle Pig to cover the cube and then... started drinking.
First sips: harder on the tongue and nose.
Middle sips: fabulous as the melt breathed some space into that shit, dig?
Last sips: fuck, I'ma need to pour me more of this jazz.
And that's EXACTLY what I did, you jive ass, bitches: I poured a second with a new cube. Now, I'm pretty much a Rye expert, thank you very much.
Gary,
The Whistlepig Rye was very good, I preferred it slightly watered down (just a splash of water) or served with an ice cube. But perfectly sippable straight as well
David,
You know, I didn’t rate so high upon first drink, but as I had more over several nights I grew to like more and more. Then my buddy drank the rest of it! I’d enjoy this again
Gregory,
I'm not a Bourbon fan and this tasted too much like Bourbon for me. I did like it much better on the rocks than neat.
Nick,
Excellent for old fashioned. A little bit spicy for straight sipping
Greg,
I really enjoyed PiggyBack Rye. It was perfect for sipping and it mixed very well. I would recommend it to friends.
Ray,
Ok
David,
Why PiggyBack Rye is a little sharp/spicy to my taste for straight sipping, it's EXCEPTIONAL for mixing and turned out some of the best Old Fashions and Whiskey Sours I've ever had.
Curtis,
Not much flavor.....it was ok.
Brian,
I felt this was too much cinnamon and spicy on the front. I usually drink high end bottles like this neat or with ice/water, but it was just too much. I used it in a Manhattan which gave it nice character. Not a fan though.
Jeremy,
Solid, though not spectacular. Tried it neat, neat with a splash of water, and with one cube, and I liked it best with a little splash of water to smooth out the edges.
Del,
Love it! Slight peppery flavor, smooth.
Brian,
I have never been a fan of Rye and I am still not. I didn’t care for the Whistlepig, not smooth and had a harsh finish. It was drinkable when used in a mixed cocktail. I would not have ever picked this but I had no choice. Unless you love rye whiskey don’t buy this.
Brian,
This was the first Rye, I have tried, and found it was good. I will seek out another for comparison.
Royce,
This is my first venture into Rye. I'm still trying to understand spirits, I'm very much an amateur. Vanilla and Caramel notes stand out when sipped at room temp. Slightly rough around the edges though. A touch of cool water or a few small ice chips muzzle the bite and smooth out the edges but still preserves it's spicy/woody character. It sips well enough that I felt it would be a waste in a cocktail. Feels more approachable than others I've tried.
David,
I am not a fan of high rye content bourbon at all, so I did. It care for it. I hope that my other bottles will
Not be similar to this
Christopher,
My first true quality Rye whiskey. Very enjoyable, nice note of cinnamon and a slight sweetness.
Doug,
Excellent, very drinkable. Have recommended it to several friends.
Bruce,
Extremely satisfying smooth buttery Carmel tasting no after burn Most enjoyable.
Eric,
Great flavor but the ending is not as smooth as expected
Joshua,
I didn’t care for it much. Wish you Would have gave me more options to choose from for my first order. Didn’t really have a choice on the first box since you basically picked it for me. I don’t feel I am getting my monies worth.
Jason,
Very tasty whisky! I usually don’t like rye whiskeys or bourbons, but this one was very good. Great heat and spice up front, with a nice mellow, slightly smokey flavor at the end. I drank it neat, and it was very sippable. I had several glasses one night, and woke up with no lingering side effects the next day like I usually do after drinking rye. Would definitely recommend and will but more.
Raymond,
I am not much of a rye fan but I found this one to be smooth and easy to drink
Clay,
Very pleasing rye spice embodied in a rounded flavor experience - not too harsh on the nose, rising notes of candied fruit and peppery spice in the mouth, with a long, woody (smokey?), sweet finish. I think this spirit provides easy access, off the bourbon highway into the land of rye whiskey at a decent price point.
Trevor,
Pretty average and over priced. I'm more of a fan of Knob Creek.
John,
This is the best tasting American Whiskey that I have ever tasted. I took a bottle for me and a friend to enjoy while we were on vacation with our families in South Florida. I bought another bottle as a gift!
David,
Being relatively new to the flavor of a true rye ,this has opened up a whole new taste profile to my pallet. I do enjoy it and think it was a great first selection for me .
kevin,
A bit harsh straight but not bad. Haven’t tried making a drink with it...
Daniel,
I don't really like whiskey
Dermot,
Very good. I would buy again
Bradley,
Excellent Rye definitely a contender to Templeton Rye 6 yr which is my favorite Rye
Norman,
This bottle was very good.
Donald,
Wouldn’t ever purchase a bottle very boring single not. Might be good as a mixer but not at the price they are asking
Steve,
I loved this whistle pig. I tasted a little vanilla and some spice but it was full bodied on the tongue but went down very smooth. I had sampled the home stock and wasn’t impressed at all but this one is a keeper
John,
I enjoy scotch, not Rye
Will,
Loved this! I enjoy the 10 year, but this is much more affordable.
Brian,
A very good experience. The initial spice is rounded nicely with a flavorful finish.
Matthew,
I expected a little more. It is a good rye but a little too spicy for my tastes
Robert,
I am relatively new to Rye Whisky, so take my review for what it is worth. Compared to a few others that I have sampled, I thought this was nice on the rocks but with a little more burn then I like.
Kevin,
So smooth for a 96.5 proof. Will buy this again
Mark,
Loved the Piggyback. Smooth, sweeter with a little bite on the finish, notes of honey and vanilla and pepper. Will definitely Buy it again.
Robert,
Loved Whistle Pig! Very smooth. Over ice or w/some help. Been a Crown Royal fan for many years, but this is a step up!
Max,
Very smooth and great drink. Love to drink this anytime.
Andrew,
Nice, balanced rye. Prefer it as a mixer to straight.
Lawrence,
This is the first Whistle Pig I have truly enjoyed. Very clean bit not too sharp. I found it quite smooth for sure. Will order again.
Michael,
Did not care for the Whistle Pig Piggyback. Guess I didn’t realize it was a Rye Whiskey when I chose it. I do not like Rye Whiskey.
I liked the Scotch in the sample package. The other whiskeys were ok, but not something I would buy.
Bryan,
Outstanding and smooth!
Mark,
Very smooth, with a lite cinnamon back. After taste is like a red hot candy.
Jeff,
Had not tried any Whistle Pig prior to this bottle ... but I must say, I'm becoming a fan. Previously I was (still am) a fan of Crown, Pendleton, Bullet and Dry Fly ... but now this is certainly on the list.
James,
Very nice. Smooth start into a little orange and a spicy finish.
Maurice,
Worth the name. Excellent entry level Whistle Pig for starters. Big WP fan.
Ray,
Definitely noticed the citrus. Not my favorite for drinking alone, but I'll be mixing it with orange things.
Aaron,
Smooth and spicy. Loving it in an Old Fashioned.
Chris,
Very good Rye on its own over ice, but add a little lemonade to take the edge off and it is exactly as they say.... a great cocktail Rye.
John,
Very nice; I'm very glad rye is making such a comeback.
I am not, however, adapting well to the chest-beating trend of making the ryes 90+ proof.
PHILIP,
Upon first taste I thought “oh no, what did I get?” What a burn. They next time I drank it over ice and fell I. Love with it. It was a completely different experience. Highly recommend.
Laura,
Lots of cinnamon and spice, really nice
Joel,
Nice suddle flavor throughout entire drink
Michael,
Very drinkable. Smooth.
Nick,
Really liked it.
Jay,
Very enjoyable with the initial taste and the lasting flavor profile.
Mike,
A good, sturdy rye.
Andres,
Smooth taste of vanilla and back notes of spices
Dan,
This is admittedly my first review, so I am struggling with the number of stars to give. Overall, this is a good Rye Whiskey that I am enjoying with a cube of ice (I prefer my drinks chilled). It's got some good spice to it, and finishes fairly smooth.
Jerry,
It's not my favorite rye. I mostly taste the alcohol. Not worth the money in my opinion.
Andras,
A bit bitter and a bit sour. Makes a poor Maple Old Fashioned even though it has maple in the tasting notes. I’ll try with simple syrup tonight
Brendan,
A decent rye but not as good as I hoped for. A little disappointed this was required for the first bottle delivery in the membership. Especially since it's intended to be used for mixing and not for a plain dram.
Daniel,
Grainy taste with some fire. Not as smooth as a typical rye, but still enjoyable.
David,
Very nice rye. Spicy but not too spicy. Less grassy than some others. Sweeter too. More like bourbon, which I like.
Tyler,
Digging the blend of spice and citrus!
john,
Liked it
Brad,
This rye makes a fantastic old fashioned. It is my first bottle of Whistle Pig and I know I have many more evenings of enjoyment ahead with it.
Chris,
Nice spice on the nose and palate, carmel and fruit on the finish.
Charles,
First from the club. Butterscotch on the nose. Smooth. Can imagine it in an old fashioned and tasting great but...who wants to spend $50 bucks on something that needs other flavors to make it great? I'll enjoy this bottle but don't think I would but it.
Michael,
This is JUST the right amount of kick with some smoothness. Underrated.
Clinton,
Love this bottle. My favorite of the Whistlepig bottles I’ve had. Found it to be smooth and flavorful.
Joseph,
The tasting notes and flavor spiral are accurate. I really taste the spice, vanilla, and the grapefruit. This is a very smooth rye, and I will definitely buy it again. Great for sipping, and very enjoyable.
Jess,
Tasting notes are on target. Very spicy, strong cinnamon and pepper. Probably best in a cocktail.
Jess,
Follow-up. Excellent with Fever Tree Ginger Beer. :)
Jerry,
I definitely am still getting a taste for Rye whiskey, but this one is very smooth and easy to drink. I would highly recommend this one for anyone starting to try whiskey and wanting to try rye.
Tara,
Not usually a rye fan, but this one is exceptional.
Ryan,
So smooth and great flavor
Duane,
Flavorful rye and very smooth. Big pepper finish. Really liked it!
Michael,
New to Rye. Smooth at the start, the fruity flavors comes through as it travels. A nice introduction to the Club.
Justin,
Very good bang for the buck whistlepig
John,
Awesome.
jaime,
Solid 5. Strong rye spice. You either like it or you don’t. Definitely a mixer (old fashion or Manhattan). 1 for presentation (it did arrive). The cork fell off. I’ve read similar reviews. Time to pull it out of the shed and store in the climate controlled warehouse....
Jared,
Decent whiskey. I'm just not a fan of rye.
Joe,
I guess Ryes just aren’t for me. I have yet to meet one that I really liked. The only reason I tried the WistlePig, is because I didn’t have any say in the matter. For my first selection (I’m new to the club), I wasn’t given the option to select another. I almost didn’t rate this Spirit because of that fact. I will say, although Ryes aren’t for me, this was the best one I’ve tried so far.
Joel,
The spice is pretty overpowering, so much so that I can't really taste any of the other flavors. It's not bad, just probably not something I'd buy again.
Joel,
Should add...with a drop or two of water, the cinnamon does come out a bit. But drinking it neat, I wouldn't count on it.
Michael,
Pretty good, not much by way of knowledge, but I did enjoy this.
Rick,
I'd like to separate out the flavor with how the bottle arrived but I cannot. If the stopper disconnects rendering it impossible to enjoy without a nice sprinkling of cork...perhaps the QA is missing.
Katie,
I like it. Don’t know if I’d buy it again. But I like it.
Wes,
Delicious and smooth. Sweet tasting.
Pedro,
Great finish, you can feel it hugging your esophagus without a bad burn. I’d still pay the extra $ for the 10 year rye but the Piggy Back is on my top 5 ryes.
Michelle,
Great flavor pretty to drink neat
Joshua,
If i tasted this blind, I would have said it was Noah's Mill or a rye they decided to produce. I get mostly cinnamon, spicy, a touch of sweetness on the finish. The Noahs Mill batch 18-19 is a cinnamon bomb which brings the comparison to mind. I got it for $46 locally but for that price I would easily prefer Bulleit Rye or James E Pepper Rye. I'm not sure i can think of another rye to actually compare the taste to due to the unique flavor (not like Bulleit, Knob Creek, George Dickel, Jack Daniels, Rossville, jim beam, Traverse City or High West)
Kelly,
Very smooth
Jerry,
One of the best bang for the buck Rye I have found. I will get this before the 12 year WhistlePig every time.
John,
The first sip, strong alcohol.
Ryan,
All I get it cinnamon on the nose and finish. “Zesty” is an understatement. Not as fiery as straight up cinnamon whiskey, but damn if I can pull out any other flavors.
The second nose after a taste was pleasant; vanilla cinnamon.
But this will definitely be a mixer for me. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, have never been a “neat” drinker. I tried it with a drop of water and after letting it open for 20 mins or so. No change.
Works well in the one cocktail I’ve made (Old Flame). I’ll see how it does in an Old Fashioned which is my usual go to. But I won’t be buying more.
Greg,
Smooth
Todd,
I have never really enjoyed a rye whisky, but this one was really good. It was smooth and did not have a sharp bite as most rye's do. This is the one rye I will drink again.
Keivn,
Nose: Toffee and apricot
Taste: Toffee and spice on the front. Spicy middle. Lasting hug.
Nick,
I usually love rye whiskey but I did not enjoy this one. All of the flavor sits right up front of the pallette, so it all mingles together in a indecipherable, peppery morass and the finish is almost non-existent.
Maybe it needs to sit in the barrel a little while longer, I don't know, but I wasn't a fan.
Michael,
Above average Rye, great sipper or with some ice
Guy,
Little much up front rye that tends to give it a medicine taste it did have a better finish
Christie,
I’m not a huge fan of rye due to the “burn”, but this was by far the best rye I have ever had!
Robert,
Not a big fan of rye but not bad. Does not go well with a rock but neat or a little coke for sure. On a rock brings out a menthol that I find in ryes and dont like. Neat you dont get it at all.
Gilbert,
This is a very good eye.
I’m a bourbon guy. And this is as good or better than my favorite...Knob Creek.
Michael,
First Bottle with the club membership. Very smooth, made a great Old Fashioned before dinner.
Bryan,
Ok on it’s own, but fantastic as a Manhattan!
Peyton,
First rye whiskey I’ve had since was gifted a bottle of WhiskeyPig 12year.
I’m new to whiskey comparisons, however did like them both.
Andy,
super smooth nose and initial mouth. Very unique sweet/tangy nose...probably best part. light Oil mouth but sits on top of the tongue. Too spicy for my liking but not bad considering 100%Rye. Probably will grow on me. The flavor is unique but simple at the same time. Vanilla with leather finish
John,
JUST HAD IT FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT CAME WITH MY FIRST INSTALLMENT FROM FLAVIER. I LIKE IT AND IT MAKES A GREAT OLD FASHION.
John,
My review may not be the one you want if you are a rye drinker. The eye flavor is dominant and the heat builds rapidly. It does smooth out but, the aftertaste is not pleasing to me. Not to say I'm not finishing this bottle, just not me flavor profile.
Mark,
One of the best rye whiskeys I’ve had. Really smooth and full of flavor. I’ll enjoy this bottle to the last drop!
David,
If you are a Rye drinker this is one for you. I personally do not like my whiskey hot....
Nick,
An interesting mix of flavors. This is my first Rye. It's complex. A bit pungent and grain flavored with just a touch of spice to me.
Michael,
Really enjoyed this one!
Jonathan,
Love it.
Jeff,
Definitely taste the spice and the cinammon. Chocolate (?) on the back of the mouth. "Spiced rum" is a good analogy here.
Chad,
Nice smooth sipper. Sweet finish, cinnamon on the nose. Highly recommend and good price point.
SCOTT,
A classic rye. Spicey, vanilla, a bit hot. Better choices for the price such as Pikesville or Angels Envy.
Scott,
Very good mid range bourbon. Nice aroma. Lasting taste. Good purchase.
Nick,
So far I am really enjoying this on the rocks. It has a great nose to it that kind of reminds me of hot candied pecans. This was an awesome first bottle.
ROB,
I prefer spiced rum and this is a great bridge between rum and whiskey. It has nice undertones of cinnamon, cardamom, and other warm spices, but certainly has a whiskey base.
David,
I tend to prefer "traditional" bourbon over rye but must admit that this was an excellent surprise. I will be more open to drinking rye in the future, particularly this one.
Warren,
My first from the club and really enjoying it.
Katherine,
I'm not an expert on writing whiskey reviews, but its true that you can really taste the fruit and spice notes on the first sip. I haven't mixed it yet in a cocktail, but at 96.56 proof, it can stand alone as a straight drinking whiskey.
Bob,
One of the best rye's I have had
Kevin,
Surprisingly sweet, lots of cinnamon with some heat on the finish.
Chris,
Love it
Tom,
Love it
Tom,
Ima a Scotch, Bourbon, Irish Whisky fan. This is my first Rye, I. Loved. It! Both neat and with a few rocks.
Rick,
Sipping with some ice - completely enjoyable. Not too spicy for my palate, underlying flavors that are displayed in flavor spiral become more apparent as ice melts. Nice work
Matthew,
I little too spicy drinking it neat, but right on the money in an Old Fashioned for me.
Juan,
Great Flavor and profile.
Matthew,
Straight forward and smooth rye, with a happy finish. I made a Manhattan with orange bitters and it pulled out the citrus notes.
Jan,
Love the smoke flavor but too “bitey”
Jerome,
There seems to be a unique creaminess to this rye that I had not experienced in a rye yet. Very warm and inviting with a peppery end. It will be placed in the "special" section of my bar.
Kirk,
Spicy rye that I really enjoyed. Great for old fashioneds.
Lawrence,
A surprisingly balanced Rye. I enjoyed it in its own as well as making a great Old Fashioned. I will be sampling more Whistle Pig in the future.
Marc,
Way too sweet for me, might just be ryes in general, don't know.
JOHN,
it's spicy on the 1st sip, but give it some time...the flavors explode as the ice melts!
Michelle,
Not my Favorite of the Whistlepigs. Still good for a sample
Brian,
This is my first rye and it’s amazing!
Joey,
Excellent flavor
Brendan,
Not my favorite to sip but makes and AMAZING old fashioned!
Peter,
A little harsh without a sweetness I was expecting from a rye
Joshua,
Like it
steve,
subtle tastes that roll smoothly across the tongue
Beau,
I would like to score this based on what I know it's for; a bartender friendly, decent price point, mixer rye. That said, in sipping it neat it's clearly a young whiskey and tastes as such.
Michael,
When it comes to drinking, rye is my first choice every time. However, I was surprised to find this one to be a little bit on the harsher side , especially in my go to drink: an old-fashioned. Regardless of it’s bite, it was still an enjoyable drink, however not as good as Whistlepig’s Old World Series 12 year. If you have the chance, and the money, I’d pick that bottle over this one any day
patricia,
It’s a smooth rye. Easy sipper. Love it
Robert,
Very spicy and tight. Excellent to drink as an old fashion with muddle fruit. It needs the sugar and fruit to open it up. I liked it .. but to drink neat.
Robert,
This Rye is very spicy and tight. Lots of flavors that definitely need water or a cocktail mix to bring them out. If I was to drink it regularly it would be in an old fashioned with the fruit muddled. It needs that extra citrus, sugar and ice to tone it down. But as an old fashioned it is amazing and has many flavors you don't get when making an old fashioned with your standard rye blend. Liked it... But to hot to drink neat.
Glen,
I have try almost all of the WhistlePig years and I have to say the Piggy Back is a GREAT choice!
I have already pick up a few more bottles , it was that good,,,, another WINNER from WhistlePig!!!!
It’s a great match with a Davidoff late night cigar!
Jason,
Surprisingly good
Gary,
This doesn't stand out. The 10 yr Whistlepig is my favorite rye, and I was hopeful that it would be close to the 10 yr for almost half the price. The profile is there, but it just doesn't have the depth of the older bottle. It's fine, but there are better rye's for fewer dollars.
Dustin,
Fantastic rye! Smooth. Probably the best rye I've had at this price.
Vincent,
Very tasty 6 year rye - smooth with a good amount of rye spice. Definitely a sipper if you like ryes, almost as good as their 10 year. And yes, it makes a mean Manhattan!
Harrison,
This rye smells spicier than it sips. I’ve half a mind to not mix it, but since WP made it for ‘fashioned’s it’s going to have to happen.
John,
Sharp dipping whiskey
Timothy,
10 year....Smooth. Peppery. Great drink.
Zack,
this is a great rye great value a quick favorite
Dan,
Spectacular rye. Wonderful balance and makes a mean old fashioned.
Jose,
Great taste, definitely one of my favorites
Stefano,
This only tastes alcohol to me. Maybe my palate got used to mild tasty Japanese whiskeys recently but that's all I can get out of this. But the bottle is nice
