Well, it was founded by Christian Krogstad, who graduated from the Siebel Institute of Technology — America’s oldest brewing academy. He worked at craft breweries and a vineyard before founding what would become Westward in 2004 to bring his vision for an American Single Malt to life. The Westward team was expanded in 2011 when Thomas Mooney joined as co-founder and CEO, accelerating growth and bringing that vision to a wider audience. Today, this Oregon distillery produces signature Spirit brands including Krogstad Aquavit, Volstead Vodka, Casa Magdalena Rum, and Westward Whiskey.
Let’s begin with Westward American Single Malt Whiskey that starts its journey as an American Pale Ale and undergoes slow fermentation and double distillation. The new Spirit is then matured in lightly toasted new American Oak barrels. No shortcuts are taken, an approach that resulted in Double Gold at San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Then, let’s celebrate Oregon's legendary brewing culture with Westward American Single Malt Oregon Stout Whiskey. You see, there is a longstanding cask-trading tradition among select Beer producers in the Northwest. This Stout Cask Finish expression starts the same way as the classic Single Malt, but with a very tasty difference – the Stout-enriched barrels hold the Whiskey for (at least) another year and give it a wonderful Stout finish. Bottled at 92 proof, this beautiful potion walked home with Gold from the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
And last but not least, a super limited-edition ALERT! Westward has a Pinot cask-finished Spirit in their core lineup, but this one was made especially for us and it has a lighter, more herbaceous flavor profile. Westward partnered with us and their favorite Oregon Wine-makers — Greg McCellan and Melissa Rondeau of Suzor Wines — to make just 745 bottles of this special Flaviar edition Westward American Single Malt Pinot Noir Cask Finish.
