Westward Whiskey Distillery was founded by Christian Krogstad, who graduated from the Siebel Institute of Technology — America’s oldest brewing academy. He worked at craft breweries and a vineyard before founding what would become Westward in 2004 to bring his vision for an American Single Malt to life. The Westward team was expanded in 2011 when Thomas Mooney joined as co-founder and CEO, accelerating growth and bringing that vision to a wider audience. Today, this Oregon distillery produces signature Spirit brands including Krogstad Aquavit, Volstead Vodka, Casa Magdalena Rum, and Westward Whiskey.
Westward American Single Malt Whiskey starts its journey as an American Pale Ale that goes through slow fermentation and double distillation that turns the brewy caterpillar into a beautiful Whiskey butterfly. The new Spirit is then matured in lightly toasted new American Oak barrels. No shortcuts are taken, an approach that resulted in Double Gold at San Francisco World Spirits Competition. If you're lost, always go Westward.
What does Westward American Single Malt Whiskey (375ml) taste like?
The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Westward American Single Malt Whiskey (375ml) and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.
We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.
Dog Dogson's
Smartass Corner
Rye Whiskey is made from mash that is at least 51 percent rye. The grain gives Rye Whiskey its spicy, sometimes peppery, and bitter flavor. It was a big seller before Prohibition, and after decades in obscurity, it’s fashionable again. Fun fact: George Washington distilled Rye Whiskey at Mount Vernon.

Finish
Long herbal finish with a touch of orange peel, cocoa, and lemon.
Very smooth. A little light on flavor but still enjoyable. Picked up notes of vanilla, burned caramel and corn. Very smooth
Gabriela,
One of my favorites!! Smooth, lightly sweet, just a delicious sipping whiskey. Reading the reviews you would think otherwise, but I really found this excellent! Cheers to different palates and likes : )
Matthew,
The initial smell was not appealing but I gave it a second and it began to smell better. The flavor was fruit to start and a chocolate at the end. No burn smooth.
Very nice.
Brian,
Bitter
Chelsey,
Nice medium weight; very smooth
Steven,
cow dung
Craig,
This is so bad I can't drink it. There has only been 1 other bottle in my life where I couldn't finish the bottle.
Kristen,
Really enjoyed this!
Matt,
Very good smooth American whiskey with just the right amount of spice.
Steve,
I never knew what "rotgut" was until I tasted this one. I really can't believe that Flaviar sent this trash to their members. I poured it out. No complexity to the taste, a finish like gasoline and took four Tums to soothe my stomach.
guest,
Y
Justin,
It is very enjoyable, smooth and leaves you wanting more.
Stephanie,
I like the flavor. Just the right amount of smokey flavor.
Craig,
Nothing about this that I liked. Flavor was bizarre And harsh.
Owen,
At first i was a little annoyed at the mini bottle they sent but after tasting i wish it was smaller. Nose is spicy upfront and finishes like playdough. Butterscotch is overwhelming and finishes with a harsh lingering over ripe melon that evokes some mild nausea. Its like that cantaloupe that sits on your counter until there is a swarm of fruit flies and you are like hmmm maybe its still good. But it’s definitely not. For the first time i wish COVID19 had taken my sense of taste.
Owen,
At first was a little annoyed i wasted my pick
on a mini bottle. Nose is spicy upfront and finishes like playdough. Butterscotch flavor is overwhelming and a long lingering harsh finish that evokes some nausea. For the first time i wish COVID19 had taken my taste away.
martin,
Average in flavor
Once you've had something like Four Roses...
Bruce,
Excellent finish.
George,
The Oregon Whiskey was great. Gone too quickly - but that was my fault.
George,
A very unique whiskey, mild and flavorful with an interesting finish.
Matt,
Absolutely delicious! Very smooth and flavorful.
Charles,
Surprisingly delightful. I tasted notes of pine and earth... which honestly doesn't sound good to me generally, but is a great combination in this drink! The orange flavors and the Caramel compliment nicely! I don't know if this review would encourage others, but it worked well for me.
Don,
Excellent!
Kurt,
This is good but not great. The nose is very orange vest. Butterscotch sweet up front on the tongue for sure. The finish is pretty heavy oak and herbs (sort of grassy) and that lingers on your pallet. It’s unique but not the kind of unique you go back for. Another “free” bottle you wouldn’t buy otherwise.
Owen,
Very Smooth and nice taste. Not over powering. Very good.
guest,
Fruity
Michal,
It is very different from any whiskey I've ever tasted. Mellows out and is pretty good on the rocks.
Michael,
super smooth
Amber,
This was a really cool experience - butterscotch on top of malt. Really happy to have this on my bar
Brice,
Great butterscotch taste at first but finish is to harsh for me.
Carolyn,
Like chewing on a piece of juniper
Adrian,
Definitely heavy butterscotch but it’s a great sipper. One that’ll I’ll buy again.
Ben,
Heavy butterscotch up front, with cocoa/cinnamon finish.
Adrian,
This has a delicious orange and apricot finish! I am a huge oak nose fan and this does not disappoint. I love how easy this is to sip. Not too spicy.
NATHAN,
Not a fan of the floral taste. Overall way too sweet.
Charles,
Amazingly fresh taste, living up to its “grain to glass” reputation
Gabriel,
Not as smooth as I had hoped for, and also a bit sweeter than expected. Decent all around otherwise.
Edward,
Decent. Good aroma. First taste was a bit attention getting, but subsequent sips were quite pleasant. Slight sweetness. Good aftertaste. Worth having around.
Neil,
Not what I had hoped for
Brad,
Great whiskey but nothing more than what you get from Jim beam or Evan Williams
Amanda,
Loved this one from the very first, neat little sip! It has a gentle sweetness to it, very smooth all the way down and a pleasant aroma. This very easily could become my daily pour.
Ray,
Was not as good as I had hoped. In all fairness, I also came down with Covid 19 when I got the bottle which may have interfered with how it tasted. My neighbor loved it.
Steve,
earthy
Wendy,
Almost had a peachy wash…very good
Timothy,
One of my favorites at the moment. Will add more comments after my next glass.
david,
it is to good to share. But I did anyway. wish the bottle came in gallon size
Michihiro,
So my first taste just didn’t impress....the finish was a little harsh and it put me off. However, i gave it another try and this time i really enjoyed it - not sure what the difference was but this time i really got a contrast between spice and balanced sweetness. It’s young and so you get a bit of alcohol burn on the back end but it wasn’t harsh this time around. Westward is definitely worth a taste - looking forward to trying their stout finish
Mark,
Sweet. Good.
James,
Absolutely magnificent
Gage,
Not too smooth.
Scott,
Complex on the nose, leaning toward the sweet side, finishing with mango. Not my typical flavor profile but quite good.
Don,
Wasn’t my favorite. It wasn’t very smooth.
Scott,
Nose was complex...as I swirled and sniffed, I got pear, sour apple, some vegetation, and the barley. The taste is very unique. The dried fruit is dead on...almost tropical. Not for the traditionalist, but something I can still get behind
Cody,
Very distinct - I can see why some may not care for the flavor, considering it's unlike many whiskeys, which I'd attribute to the process of using a pale ale. Sweet and smooth. Having tried it neat, on the rocks, and in an old fashioned, I'd recommend on the rocks reading "The Nickel Boys" or "Beloved" or some other dark and desparing American classic novel that could benefit from the brightening quality of the sweet punch on the nose and the smooth finish of this whiskey.
Brian,
So, so, so drinkable. Smooth, tons of flavor.
JASON,
Very sweet, enjoyed the flavor.
cameron,
very sweet on the nose with butterscotch and almost a little mocha? , also a very sweet taste of butterscotch with a mild kick of spice , the finish is one of the smoothest if had so far and is fantastic.
Monica,
This is a smooth slightly spicy whiskey. I have really enjoyed experiencing this lovely sipper.
Mark,
crisp finish, lacks flavor
Scott,
There are not many bottles of whiskey I won't finish, but I am not a fan of this at all. There is a really bizarre flavor in here that is very unappealing.
William,
Easy drinker but a little one note. Sweet and light.
Sara,
OMG!
This may just be my new favorite. Absolutely love it.
Mel,
Shades of a Scotch but, as with most American whiskys, more sweet than salty or peaty. The citrus finish is pleasant and needed to break up the initial sweetness. It’s got a nice viscosity without being syrupy. I’m not yet a convert to American whisky, but this one may be a stepping stone.
Raymond,
Very smooth. For my taste, like an American scotch.
Dan,
Not bad. I’m a big scotch drinker, just getting into American Whisky. Has a nice bite to it.
Joshua,
Smooth, easy to drink
Daniel,
Really tasty, smooth stuff. Nice and sweet and bread notes.
James,
Nice whiskey. Oak, vanilla and floral on the nose.
Oak, spice, cinnamon & citrus on the tongue. A bit of alcohol burn but not too bad. Finishes with hints of citrus and cocoa.
Jonathan,
Very different flavor but very good.
Gary,
Bold flavor with plenty of oak, spices, and slight floral notes, but harsh on the finish. A nice experience if that edge and be dulled with a large rock or a splash of water, as loathe as I usually am to recommend that.
Edouard,
Intense but balanced and pure as a single malt. Very nice discovery for a US single malt
JOSE,
I was pleasantly surprised with this bottle. Only chose the bottle cause it was the only one available when I joined. But man was I shocked. On the first nosing I thought I was going to like it but it opened up very nicely. Might not be for everyone, but it sure was for me. Like I said, pleasant surprise!!
Michelle,
Nice bold flavor, would have preferred a bigger sized bottle!
ISMAEL,
It was nice
Paul,
This was very good. Smooth with a nice kick on the finish.
David,
OK, but not my favorite
Jerry,
I wasn't a fan of this one.
Jerry,
I wasn't a fan of this one.
Lucas,
Much more then expected. Fantastic all around
Jordan,
It's got a very sweet kick with possible notes of vanilla. Very strong but also very good. It came recommended to me by an acquaintance of mine who usually buys a bottle whenever they are in portland and I brought it to a party and it got no complaints and was definitely empty by the end of the night, even with a large selection of other options available
Jay,
This is good stuff. The Flavor Spiral is very accurate. Solid bourbon for the price point.
Luis,
Too spicy for me. Average flavor
James,
The different flavors you experience are wonderful.
David,
Smooth and full taste, with hints of nuts (almonds maybe)
Robert,
This stuff is great!
Sooraj,
This is one is hard to swallow. Nose deceives you. Won't try this one again.
Daniel,
Has a very strange nose, almost plastic like. The taste was smooth and much better than expected. Heavy mouth feel. Nice finish.
