Westward Whiskey was founded by Christian Krogstad, who graduated from the Siebel Institute of Technology—America’s oldest brewing academy. Today, his Oregon distillery produces five signature Spirits, including Aquavit, Vodka, Casa Magdalena Rum, tasty coffee Liqueur, and of course Westward American Whiskey.
Westward Whiskey is an original American Single Malt twice-distilled in copper pot stills and aged in lightly-charred new American Oak. It’s a Single Malt fermented like an Ale and aged like a Bourbon. Interesting combo, right? There’s a reason that each release of Westward Whiskey sells out so fast.
Based in Portland, Oregon, Westward Whiskey was founded in 2004. The company produces a number of Liqueurs, Whiskeys, Vodkas, Rums, and Aquavits.
The distillery has its own tasting room in Portland's famous Distillery Row and offers tours to the public. The focus, for these guys, is on craft, small-batch Spirits, using the finest ethically sourced ingredients.
For example, the Westward American Single Malt is made with barley grown in the Pacific Northwest. Every batch of every Spirit and Liqueur is overseen by the Master Distiller.
Due to the fact that Whiskey is essentially made from Beer, Westward hand-crafts their Whiskeys by initially brewing an American Pale Ale, from scratch, using locally malted barley, ale yeast, and slow, low-temperature fermentation. The Ale is then twice distilled in their bespoke low reflux pot stills, designed to create a bold and robust Spirit.
Westward Whiskey is an award-winning American single malt. The Northwest provenance delivers a distinctly rich, brazen Whiskey, balanced and full of bold flavors of sweetness and spice. The unique culture, climate, and natural ingredients of the American Northwest impart a unique character onto the Single Malt, which is aged to taste in Oregon. Here the hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters create an ideal environment to mature high-quality Whiskey.
Every great Whiskey from every place in the world has a piece of that culture in it.
It is a part of the product, it is a part of the team who makes it, it is a part of the story of that Whiskey and in the case of Westward American single malt, that place is Oregon.
Westward American single malt is a new category and it's one that we are really pioneering and foraging the path of.
The reason why Westward Whiskey needs to be on everybody's back bar or in everyone's home is because it's different than anything else you'll ever taste. You can taste the quality in all of the ingredients.
Every drop of Westward we have every bottled began life as craft Beer. We are one of the largest pale ale breweries in Oregon. We just so happened to take that pale ale and distill it and turn it into Westward American single malt Whiskey.
It begins with the quality of the ingredients and the care that we put into what we do with them. Every one of those barrels began life in a barley field as a half a ton of barley. We age our Westward American single malt Whiskey in medium char American white oak barrels.
Once Westward goes into the barrel, it'll be many years before that product is actually ready to bottle and to take out into the world.
The end result is a product that I personally feel like it's completely different than any other American single malt that I've had on the market.
We're always very proud when we get great news about yet another accolade that the brand has picked up: the gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, highly recommended rating from the ultimate beverage challenge, 94 point rating from Wine Enthusiasts.
We've had malt Whisky from Scotland for hundreds of years and we had the opportunity to really make something uniquely American right here in Oregon in one of the world's great brewing cultures.
Westward American single malt Whiskey is an expression of that Beer culture that is recognized around the world.
