An Icelandic Gin that retains the memory of the grains and the herbs of its arctic homeland.
Eimverk Distillery was founded in 2009 and began distilling in 2013. More interesting is that it was founded in Iceland. Even more interesting than that is that it was designed to make Single Malt Whisky. Everything they make is created using pure glacial water, locally grown Icelandic barley, and a traditional copper pot still. Today they have three core product ranges — their Single Malt Whiskey, Vor Gin, and the caraway-flavored Icelandic Brennivin which is similar to Aquavit.
VOR Icelandic Pot Distilled Gin started as a sideline. An un-aged Spirit to help pay the bills and build a customer base while the Whiskey aged. But this lovely crisp Gin has become a popular and indispensable core offering that deserves to be exported to the rest of the world. While most grain-based Gins are distilled to a very high proof, VOR Icelandic Gin is distilled just a single time past barrels strength. This means that the base Spirit retains some of the grassy and grain characteristics that most Gins intentionally cook out.
The botanical mix includes juniper, angelica root, rhubarb, crowberries, birch leaves, creeping thyme, Iceland Moss, sweet kelp, and kale — which is a rather unique line-up and definitely reflects its signature style. It is bottled at a quite nice 47% ABV.
Smartass Corner:
In Icelandic, the word "Vor" means "springtime" — a great name for a botanical-infused Spirit.
