800 bottles of Highland perfection … no more.

There is not even a freeway off-ramp for the little town of Tomatin. But that’s OK, keeps the city-folk out. The entire population is less than 200, and since their founding in 1897, Tomatin Distillery has had to build special housing on site for employees who come from the surrounding countryside to work seasonally at the plant. But back in the 1970s, this little hamlet produced more Whisky than anyplace else in Scotland. Well, that’s no longer true, but their Highland single-malt is still a core component of many of the finest blends, including two of their own: Antiquary and Talisman.
Today, Tomatin is owned by mega-corp Takara Shuzo from Japan, where demand for their products is huge. But they stab off a select amount of their production for their own signature single-malt whisky line across a range of ages and special editions.

We get to write about exciting spirits all the time here at Flaviar. But it is special editions like this that send us scrambling to the thesaurus for new superlatives. The word “smooth” just isn’t smooth enough. The word “delicious” just fails to describe the complexity born of thirty-six years resting in premium oak. And the folks at Tomatin KNOW that this one is special. Just look at the hinged wooden case, luxurious-yet-understated decanter, and the included certificate and hand-numbered bottle.
Distilled in the Highlands in 1977 … aged 36 years in Oloroso Sherry and Bourbon oak casks … bottled in March of 2015. Read that first sentence again. Are there any sweeter words for the Scotch-lover to hear? Nope. And the best is always in short supply—there are only 800 bottles available world-wide. This is a once-in-generation dram from one of the best in the business.
