In Honour of the Hero.
The Miyagikyo (pron. mee-yag-ee-kyo) distillery is the second and larger distillery of the Nikka Whisky Company. It was established in 1969 by the genuine hero of Japanese Whisky Masataka Taketsuru. After a 3-year search Masataka settled in Sendai, in the Miyagi prefecture. He immediately recognised the area as ideal for Whisky production, with its fresh water and suitable humidity. Most of the Whisky Miyagakyo produces goes into Nikka’s popular range of blended Whiskies and only a small percentage is released as single malts, which is a shame.
Taketsuru 12YO Whisky is a pure malt Whisky (formerly vatted malt), which means it is a blend of malt Whiskies from different distilleries, in the case of Taketsuru a blend of the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. It is named as you might have guessed in the honour of the founder Masataka Taketsuru.

About The Flavour Spiral

What does Taketsuru 12YO Whisky taste like?

The Flavour Spiral™ shows the most common flavours that you'll taste in Taketsuru 12YO Whisky and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.

We invented Flavour Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Japanese Whisky can act as an interesting comparison between Scotch and Bourbon, being a Scotch-style spirit matured in conditions with greater temperature variation closer to Kentucky.

Tasting Notes

Appearance / Colour
Bright gold.
Smell / Nose / Aroma
Fruity and floral. Notes of apple pie, plum jam, vanilla and cappuccino. Also an occassional whiff of peat.
Flavour / Taste / Palate
Sweet and smooth, hints of apple, nutmeg and subtle vannila flavours, thick and honied. Buttery toffee, with spicey notes. Highly sip-able.
Quite creamy and medium-long, with vanilla and apple notes topped with a few grains of salt. Light peat flavour remains after the oak is gone.
Subtle and highly drinkable, with a rich enough body to encourage slow sipping.
