A beautiful American Single Malt, aged Solera-style.

Sometimes great things can happen when disaster strikes. Back in 1994 a small fire broke out in a barn that belonged to George Stranahan, a beer brewer from outside of Denver. The one who came to help was Jess Graber a volunteer firefighter that not only saved the day but the two soon discovered that they share the same passion, love for outdoors and good ol’ fine Whiskey. It didn’t just stay at talk and soon after the first legal distillery in Colorado since prohibition was opened.

Taking the mountain surrounding to their advantage they not only use the pure water coming down from snowy peaks but also the Rocky Mountain Barley that delivers the smooth flavor on which they are especially proud.

Stranahan's Blue Peak Colorado Single Malt Whiskey got its name from the 13-thousand-foot peak in Aspen. The dram was inspired by the beautiful alpine scenery of the Rocky Mountains. It was aged for 4 years in new American oak casks with a #3 char before it was finished Solera-style. This essentially means that the aged Blue Peak is moved into new American oak foeders for several months. Then, some of it (Never all of it!) is cut to proof with Rocky Mountain water and chill filtered. New Whiskey is added to the oak foeders and the whole thing is repeated. This is the beauty of the Solera process: it enables a continuous aging and marrying process.

Smooth and warming

An Advent calendar top pick for me, I get fruity plum notes, butterscotch, and a faint oakiness. It's very smooth drinking, slowly warms up after you swallow it down.

It's very smooth and unoffensive, possibly to a fault, because I purchased this under the impression there'd be a charred flavor - there is not. It's a good summer sipper though! Nice and fresh tasting, and very single malty. On the rocks and after a bit of melting it could even be confused with a sweet but stiff cocktail with strong honey notes. Don't buy this expecting a BBQ, but definitely buy this if eating some BBQ!

Spicy and sweet notes on the nose. Starts very sweet with some green chiles following quickly behind. The finish is butterscotch with a little toast. It is smooth and balanced. Well worth the price point.
