Pure organic Oaxacan Mezcal from the highlands with no tricks or gimmicks.

"Sombra" is the Spanish word for "shadow." Sombra Mezcal was founded by renowned Wine Sommelier Richard Betts. A few years ago the brand was acquired by Davos Brands who immediately acquired its own private palenque (Mezcal facility) that focuses on environmental-friendly production including solar-powered millstones and fiber recycling among other innovations.

Sombra Mezcal Espadin Joven forms THE core of Sombra’s Spirits. It is the Mezcal that launched the brand. Made from 100% pure Espadín agave, it even beat ALL the Tequilas to be named the Best Agave Spirit in the World for 2012, and it took home the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2016. It is pure 100% organic Mezcal with no tricks, no gimmicks that’s been small batched from a collection of villages in the Oaxacan Highlands.

While Mezcal is produced all across Mexico, most of the Mezcal we see is produced in the state of Oaxaca. Interestingly, over 70% of Mezcal is made from the Espadín agave—even though more than 20 types of agave are used to make Mezcal.
Espadín. That word means “sword” in Spanish because the leaves look like a mass of swords projecting out of the plant. Espadín Mezcals are most common because it has been the easiest agave to cultivate.
All Tequila is Mezcal, but not all Mezcal is Tequila.
