Semental Tequila Reposado is exactly what the label and logo say it is: a fiery Tequila aged in American oak just long enough to deliver a more complex flavor profile without losing its youthful spirit and fruitiness.
Hacienda de Oro mean “house of gold.” Fitting for a producer of Tequila, don’t you think? Based in Jalisco, Mexico, Hacienda de Oro has been making a lot of gold in Tequila business for more than 40 years. In order for a product to be called Tequila, it has to be either fully produced in Jalisco or a few bits and pieces of surrounding states (otherwise it is called Mescal or Agave). Hacienda de Oro is located in the middle of Tequila-central and has managed to escape all of the mergers and acquisition frenzy to remain a successful, mid-sized producer of Tequilas.
They produce many of their own brands, including Dona Jose, El Ultimo Agave, and one produced under the Hacienda label. They also quietly produce a series of sub-specialty and small batch Tequilas, including the Semental line.
So … what to make of Semental Tequila Reposado? Let’s start at the top. A “semental” is … how do I put this lightly … an “in tact” male. A “caballero semental” is a stallion. A “toro semental" is a bull—the kind they us in Mexican bullfighting. The meaning has morphed into being a leader or manly, and sure enough, the logo for Semental Tequila is a modern image of a raging bull. Tequila … we’ll assume that you know what this means. Reposado means “rested” and indicates aging of somewhere between 2 months and a year in oak barrels. It is the the Tequila “in between” silver (fresh) and Anejo (aged). Why all the semantic analysis?
This Tequila is exactly what the label says it is: a fiery Tequila rested in American oak barrels just long enough to take the edges off and deliver a more complex flavor profile without losing its youthful spirit and fruitiness. But this one drinks like a premium Tequila … tasting like an older and more expensive one and beating the “caca” out of those store-bought-golden-pseudo-Tequila-like products.
