When Semental Tequila starts talking about blending wood to enhance the aging of their Anejo Tequila, you know that you need to give it a try for yourself.

Hacienda de Oro mean “house of gold.” Fitting for a producer of Tequila, don’t you think? Based in Jalisco, Mexico, Hacienda de Oro has been making a lot of gold in Tequila business for more than 40 years. In order for a product to be called Tequila, it has to be either fully produced in Jalisco or a few bits and pieces of surrounding states (otherwise it is called Mescal or Agave). Hacienda de Oro is located in the middle of Tequila-central and has managed to escape all of the mergers and acquisition frenzy to remain a successful, mid-sized producer of Tequilas.

They produce many of their own brands, including Dona Jose, El Ultimo Agave, and one produced under the Hacienda label. They also quietly produce a series of sub-specialty and small batch Tequilas, including the Semental line.

Why would you blend wood to make barrels for Tequila? The answer is simple: Taste. Semental Tequila Anejo has been aged in special barrels that have American oak staves and French oak caps. This hybrid barrel configuration seems to transfer some of the characteristics of an aged American Bourbon and some of the floral notes a French Cognac into the Tequila.

You will not need buckets of lime and salt for this one, and with all that special attention to detail it would be a shame to pour it into a shot glass. Pour it neat into a Snifter, or even a Glencairn glass and you will not be sorry you did. Let it breath for a few minutes, then sit back taste for yourself.
