As a historical brewery, the Locher family possesses very old oak Beer barrels which have served for decades – and some for more than a century – to store Beer. During their long service, these barrels have soaked up the aroma of Beer, along with the ancient sagas and memories which now enrich this spirit of Appenzeller Säntis Malt.
Santis Cask Strength Peated Whisky is made from malt which was smoked twice over, and is matured in old beer barrels that were smoked with oak wood, something quite special in Whisky production. This causes a strong, smoky aroma of the Whisky.
Smell / Nose
Aged in oak barrels, and with a subtle aroma of apple-wood smoke, this whisky has a pure, graceful and enticing freshness. Smoked ham, burnt charcoal, peat and malt are present.
Flavor / Taste / Palate
Smoke. Smoked ham. Schlenkerla Bamberg Smokebeer. Black bread. Malty sweetness. The flavor also comprises hints of vanilla, wild berries and prunes. In the background, there’s the merest hint of green figs on the silky texture as well as a subtle touch of phenol.
Gentle, oaky, and wonderfully satisfying bitter touch. Long-lasting finish.
Different smokiness as we are used by other Whiskies. Extremely impressive.
Has both the smell, and taste, of that liquid smoke shit you add to bad chili to make it passable as food.
This is the first smoky whiskey that has my tastebuds dancing because the smokiness fades politely instead of turning into campfire ash. It has such a nice finish and is very well balanced. The vanilla notes play a nice complement.
It's not fair to underrate this excellent nectar with single one starred review. So, let's upgrade those stars. I can give it with no reservations 9+ as it is really nicely balanced, smooth and comfortable. Well done job.
I guess from reading other reviews, this goes to show you just how different each of our palates truly are. Also confirms that whisky is a matter of personal preference. I would give this close to a PERFECT score (9.7/10). I absolutely LOVED IT....never tasted anything quite like it. I have seen "Smoked Ham" in the reviews ... however, for me, it was more like "Smoked Salmon" (which oddly enough, I am not even a huge Salmon fan). My guess is that the two would pair amazingly well.

Very distasteful and difficult to get the taste out of your mouth. So thankful I only tried the sample. I took one sip, let it sit, and drank it. It was disgusting. Smells bad and tastes worse.

Its easy to see what they are trying to do - but it doesn't work. Beer cask whiskey just isn't my thing. This tastes like the stuff you drink just to get drunk.
Wow! This is probably the most interesting whisky I’ve ever had. Was not expecting the burnt maple bacon flavor. Had this during a whisky tasting and this was the one everyone is still talking about. I’m going to get a bottle to serve at the next tasting just for fun.
Mind blowing! I've never had my tastebuds be more completely speechless! Definitely, a treat sipper. A glass-a-do-ya kind of fun. It's a love it or hate it. I love it simplify for the abstract explosion of tastebud awareness! Tastebuds are 100% at attention! I can see this becoming a whole new level of exploratory expansion to the home bar!
A truly interesting whisky. Not like any other I've had. In the right moment, it would really hit the spot. Not for the faint of heart.

Interesting and different from other peated because of the hint of bitterness and vanilla flavor which play well with a measured smokiness
Started off nicely but the more I had the more it started to taste like I was drinking liquid barbecue chicken, which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for. Not something I would get again.
Terrible. Maybe just not my cup of tea but I don’t know how anyone could enjoy this. Tasted like eating campfire ashes... no other notes just straight ash. Even the nose is just campfire. Never again.

Routhless reviews for a great whisky that really begs for more. In my opinion a great drink for a steak diner or a night out with friends. I invite anyone to enjoy a taste of this heavenly whisky
Tasted more like char/firewood smoke to me than anything, and totally overwhelmed the other flavors. As a lover of all things smokey and peated, I was surprised to find I just couldn’t drink it.
Like drinking liquid beef jerky with a small hint of leather. It was a good strong taste.
Smokey, spicy, floral nose. Great ruby color. Taste: smoke, spice, dark berry, some oak. Nice balance. I enjoyed this much.

WOW! smokey...did I say smokey? very unique taste (and aftertaste). Smells tastes and feels like firewood. I wouldnt have a bottle in my bar but its a good 'once in a while' sipper.

Very interesting taste. It smells like smoke and caramel, putting me in the mind of Christmas markets. On the palate, it's quite smokey, and brings to mind barbecued pork. It's not quite 'whiskey' tasting, but kind of is. I'm mesmerized by it, and also would like to wear it as a perfume...
On the nose the smoke is certainly noticable, but not overpowering. There is none of the Islay/Laphroaig "band-aid" smell. I got a fairly strong smoky oak, with some sweet vanilla notes. After a while I could pick up smoked meat, dried fruits, and spices. Really great nose.
The smoke was moderate on the nose, but really hits hard on the palate. First impression in the mouth was of smoke and ash, with a slight malty sweetness. It has a slick, full mouthfeel. Considering this is over 50% ABV, the heat/burn was minimal, really smooth!
But the finish is where this whiskey really shines. It is long and smoky with BBQ, smoked ham, and vanilla tones rounding it out. It just hangs on forever, making you want to go back for more.
Overall pretty fantastic!
