One in a thousand – Single Cask

The distillery was founded in the 18th century by Juan Sánchez de la Torre in Jerez de la Frontera. It is one of the few remaining wineries still in the hands of local owners. In 1887 the fourth generation of the Sánchez Romate created an exclusive Brandy to amuse his family and the closest friends. The Brandy turned out to be a mega success, and so Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva was born, the firm’s flagship brand.

Uno en Mil Solera Gran Reserva  is quite special. One thousand American oak casks (previously containing Sherry) are used in a Single Cask manner – which is more common for the Whisky industry. “Solera Gran Reserva” here refers to the Spanish Brandy category, meaning the Brandy is older than 36 months. In this case 12 years actually.

The Spaniards are second only to the people of the Cognac region in the quantity of Brandy they make, and they drink far more of their own Brandy than the French do Cognac.
It is thought that wine was originally distilled to Brandy to lessen the tax which was assessed by volume.
Brandy comes from the Dutch word “brandewijn,” which literally translates to “burnt wine.” And it’s an accurate description — you distill wine by heating/burning it up in a still until the concentrated alcohol emerges.
