A tasty homage to the Maryland distilling tradition.

Like nearly all new Spirits companies, for the first few years Sagamore Spirits purchased custom formulated distillate from other production facilities. It’s the only way to get started these days. But last year they moved production to their new, private distillery with a very nice visitor center in Baltimore, Maryland. Cheers to them! The name comes from the Sagamore Farm limestone spring water used to cut their Whiskey to proof. They produce a range of award-winning, all-American Rye Whiskeys and you should try them all because they’re mighty good stuff.

Sagamore Spirit 8 Year Old Rye Whiskey is a Maryland-style Rye Whiskey, which means it’s complex yet approachable, it’s proofed with limestone-filtered water, there’s corn in the mash bill and there’s a peppery finish to round it up. This sipper starts with a straight Rye that was aged in new charred American white oak barrels for 8 years. The result is an explosion in your mouth of dark chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla, gingerbread, peppercorn, and spice that lasts long after the glass is empty. (And thank god because that usually happens pretty fast.)

Rye - think of it as Bourbon's edgier cousin. It’s known for what many call a spicy or fruity flavor. Rye (distilled from at least 51% Rye) is not on the sweet side and tends to have a spicier body. That’s why the character of a cocktail made from Rye, instead of Bourbon, is drier.
The brand is named after a thoroughbred horse racing farm, Sagamore Farm, 22 miles from the Sagamore distillery.
Rye sparked the first revolution after the American Independence. It was called the Whiskey Rebellion, and it arose when the government tried to tax Whiskey and enforce the taxation on distillers. The lesson here? Don't mess with a Whiskey drinker's dram.
George Washington famously loved his Rye Whiskey. In fact, after he served as the first president of the United States, he returned to his farm at Mount Vernon and started a small Rye distillery of his own.
A decade ago there were only 6 brands of Rye Whiskey hailing from Kentucky, nowadays there are more than 50!
