Character Goatson
A wild young gun from Montana.

It's been a while since Montana made Whiskey and it's Roughstock Distillery that brought it back after more than a hundred years. Hidden in the hills of the Bridger Mountain Range, a US Army veteran Bryan Schultz makes some mean Spirits. Everything about it is as American as it gets. Barley is grown and harvested in Montana, the fermentation happens in Oregon fir tanks, and the aging occurs in American oak barrels.

Now, the Black Label Montana Whiskey (not to be confused with the other Black Label) is a young Whiskey, aged for only two years - but it sure as hell doesn't taste like one. This "untouched, uncut, unfiltered, and unadulterated" cowboy potion is served up at a hellish 64.1% ABV, but the Whiskey manages to remain subtle and refined. To be frank, this Whiskey is a bit of a trickster. One expects a brutish young Spirit but gets elegance and flavor that usually comes from older Whiskeys. It tastes like a good single malt and let's not beat around the bush: it's pretty goddamn stunning.

And what's so special about the Black Label? Well, if you're familiar with Montana Pure Malt, it's made the same way, but aged in hand-picked barrels. And as said, it's unadulterated and at actual cask strength. Montana used to be a land of the big sky and the Unabomber, but now that's changed.

Cheerio!
