Big and bold at barrel proof to remind you what it means to be a Rye Whiskey.

George Ross founded Ross & Squibb Distillery in 1847. Aside from a brief switch to industrial production during Prohibition, it has been producing fine Spirits continuously since then. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, it has been owned by Seagram’s, Pernod Ricard, and others over the years. But since 2011 it has been the flagship of Luxco — one of the largest producers of Whiskey, Gin, and other Spirits.

To kick off the Rossville line, they created two versions of their signature Straight Rye Whiskey — one at 47% ABV and one at 56.3% ABV. Rossville Union Master Crafted Barrel Proof Straight Rye Whiskey is the bold one with a smooth finish.

While they use the same mash bills, the combination of the two is proprietary. It is a tasty amalgamation of two of their core Rye mash bills. The first is 95% rye and 5% malted barley to deliver a nice Rye kick. The second is 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% malted barley to provide a balance of sweetness. The blend is well-balanced, aged five to seven years in new oak. The release is limited to just 83 barrels, so get as much as you can as soon as you can.

Rye - think of it as Bourbon's edgier cousin. It’s known for what many call a spicy or fruity flavor. Rye (distilled from at least 51% Rye) is not on the sweet side and tends to have a spicier body. That’s why the character of a cocktail made from Rye, instead of Bourbon, is drier.
A decade ago there were only 6 brands of Rye Whiskey hailing from Kentucky, nowadays there are more than 50!
George Washington famously loved his Rye Whiskey. In fact, after he served as the first president of the United States, he returned to his farm at Mount Vernon and started a small Rye distillery of his own.
Rye sparked the first revolution after the American Independence. It was called the Whiskey Rebellion, and it arose when the government tried to tax Whiskey and enforce the taxation on distillers. The lesson here? Don't mess with a Whiskey drinker's dram.
