In the foothills of Montagne Pelee on the island of Martinique lies JM’s Rum distillery, dating back to the year 1790. The name comes from the initials of Jean-Marie Martin, the founder of the distillery.
Farmers here don’t burn the cane fields after the harvest, they simply proceed to grow bananas or pineapples on it and rotate the cultures with every new crop.
Most Rums are made from molasses, Rhum Agricole however, is made by distilling sugar cane juice. The distinct character of JM therefore comes from sugar cane that is grown in volcanic soil and damp sea air, resulting in lower sugar content. Additionally, they use fresh spring water to produce their Rum. Coming from Martinique, JM's Rhum Agricole is one of the few with Appellation d’Origine Controlle (AOC), dictating the way sugar cane is grown and processed.
Rhum JM XO is a beautifully expressive Rhum Agricole, blend of at least six years old Rums and aged in re-charred Bourbon barrels.
