Character Goatson

A Bourbon that stands out in its uniqueness.

You know how it goes. You go to paint the town red with your friends and then somebody says: “We should totally open a bar.” Or, in this case, a distillery. In 2009, Alex Toomy started distilling moonshine on his farm. In 2010, he opened the Ragged Branch Distillery with his friends Chris Sarpy and Russell Nance. It wasn’t long before the late legendary Master Distiller Dave Pickerell joined them and developed the mash. All Ragged Branch Whiskey is distilled on-site from their own grain. The milling and mashing happen daily based on the methods, entrusted to them by the late Pickerell. The distillation takes place in a custom-built 500-gallon Vendome still. It’s all farm-to-bottle, combined with modern processes and that makes Ragged Branch the award-winning independent distiller we adore so much.

Ragged Branch Bottled In Bond Virginia Straight Rye Whiskey is different than their other Bourbons. All are fantastic, naturally, but this one stands out in its boldness. With tons of spicy layers and dried fruit on the nose, you’ll be taken away by the roundness of the palate that’s bursting with sweet tobacco, almond, dried cherries, and raisins. Looks like this unique character won over the judges at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition where it was awarded a Silver Medal.

Rye - think of it as Bourbon's edgier cousin. It’s known for what many call a spicy or fruity flavor. Rye (distilled from at least 51% Rye) is not on the sweet side and tends to have a spicier body. That’s why the character of a cocktail made from Rye, instead of Bourbon, is drier.
Rye sparked the first revolution after the American Independence. It was called the Whiskey Rebellion, and it arose when the government tried to tax Whiskey and enforce the taxation on distillers. The lesson here? Don't mess with a Whiskey drinker's dram.
A decade ago there were only 6 brands of Rye Whiskey hailing from Kentucky, nowadays there are more than 50!
George Washington famously loved his Rye Whiskey. In fact, after he served as the first president of the United States, he returned to his farm at Mount Vernon and started a small Rye distillery of his own.
