Philadelphia Distilling started out in
2005 and was part of the growing wave of new craft distilleries opening across the United States. In fact, it was the first craft distillery to open in the state of
Pennsylvania since Prohibition ended.
In
2006, the company produced its first Spirit,
Bluecoat Gin, which remains its flagship bottling to this day. A
Vodka followed, then an
Absinthe, and then a barrel-aged
Gin. In 2016, the distillery moved to its current home which houses a shop, tasting room, and cocktail bar, as well as the brand new 2,500-liter hand-hammered copper pot still from
Scotland.
Philadelphia Distilling are big believers in traditional craftsmanship, which is why they use a
traditional still, married with modern design and techniques. In fact, visitors to the distillery can see the whole process of making Spirits as it happens, with windows from the bars into the distillery floor.
