Perry’s Tot is a Navy Strength Gin, which, by definition, are bottled at 57% ABV. Navy Strength Gin harks back to the 18th century, when the British Royal Navy used to carry a certain quota of Gin on every mission.
The Gin was often stored below deck with the gunpowder and other precious cargo. Some bright spark realized that if the Gin spilled onto the gunpowder, it would only still light at 57% ABV.
Perry’s Tot is named after Matthew Calbraith Perry, who served as Commandant of the Brooklyn Navy Yard between 1841 and 1843. A ‘tot’ is an old measurement, equating to roughly 70ml today.
As well as the more traditional Gin botanicals (juniper, star anise, citrus peels, cardamom), Perry’s Tot also features wildflower honey fromupstate New York.
