Penderyn Single Malt reaches new heights with double-wood aging that delivers a surprising vanilla and exotic fruit palate.

Fine Single Malt Whisky had been produced in Wales for centuries, but inexplicably ceased in 1894. The Welsh Whisky Company was founded in 2004 to put an end to this Welsh Whisky drought and bring the magic Spirit back to the land of King Arthur. But they decided to do things a bit differently. Dr. David Faraday — grandson of the famous physicist — designed a special pot still that would yield a more pure distillate at a higher ABV. And this single, one-of-a-kind still has a full capacity of only one cask of Spirit per day. Today, these fine blokes produce what they call "the smoothest Whisky on Earth," including their award-winning range of finished-wood Whiskies, Gin, Vodka, and a Merlyn Welsh Cream Liqueur that will tickle your wizard’s hat.

Penderyn Rich Oak is the latest addition to the Penderyn’s core range, and a mighty good one. Previously, the distillery had enjoyed a great success with two limited editions — The Rich Oak Single Cask and Rich Oak 50% ABV. So they have made this winning combination available everyday. The Spirit is Penderyn’s Welsh Single Malt aged first in ex-Bourbon casks, then finished in reconditioned Wine casks delivering a fruit forward profile with a heavy dose of vanilla at 46% ABV. And we have to say that the modern Penderyn decanter is just lovely.

Nice amber color but astringent nose and too much oak. Smooths out after awhile...

Nathan,
Advent #5. Vanilla on the nose. Vanilla and toffee then the cinnamon and apple. Occasionally a hint of banana towards the end. Really good, but I think there are others almost as good or just as good at a much lower price point.

Patrick
Patrick,
Smooth and balanced, cinnamon and vanilla pair perfectly with the strong oak presence

2020 Advent calendar day 5. Strong apple. Not as much of a burn as the others so far. Also had less of a smoky taste. Was able to drink without much issue.

Matthew
Matthew,
I like it. Getting sweet tropical fruits on the nose. Not quite (or not just) banana; maybe guava? Unsurprisingly a lot of oak presence, along with untoasted nuts and developed sugars (since toffee was mentioned I'll go with that). I don't feel much of a recognizable wine influence from the reconditioned barrels, but it has a good amount of character regardless.

Mark
Mark,
Taste great with a little ice

David
David,
Good oak and spice flavor.

My favorite so far from the Advent calendar. Sweet, oaky, simple. Light burn on the finish, but mellow throughout. Excited to try the Madeira finish next!

Oak, toffee and fruit. Lovely finish to the first week of Advent 2020

Louise
Louise,
Very drinkable. It is very much an evening drink; something to settle into in front of the fire.

James
James,
2020 Advent day 5 The oak is hard to miss. Oak dryness shines through in the mouth, turning into a toasty vanilla spice. Not bad, but too much dry oak for me and a bit more burn than I like

Dustin
Dustin,
Definitely oaky and sweet. More banana peel than fruit for me. Lasting vanilla notes and a cinnamon finish

Day 5 and I had to look this one up. The earthy oak hits up front with a smooth fruity finish that keeps you wanting more. Definitely adding this to the collection soon.

Very pleasant. Quite oaky on the nose, but the oaky flavor is balanced nicely with some sweet vanilla notes. Smooth finish. Enjoyable overall.

Day 5 we have a winner. Very sweet aroma. Hint of spice at first taste then it gets sweeter.

Derek
Derek,
Very pleasantly oaky with noticeable tones of vanilla and a hint of toffee on both the nose and the palate. Nice lingering finish. Surprisingly smooth for 46% abv. Definitely a solid sample from the Advent calendar, though I’m not quite sure about the value for the price.

Thomas
Thomas,
Nicer than I was expecting.

James
James,
Best yet in Advent Calendar. A smooth, rich taste with easy nose and subtle, nutty heat. Rwy’n ei argymell yn fawr.

Julie
Julie,
The oak and sweet vanilla definitely dominate up front, but not so much that the other more nuanced flavors get missed. Quite a zing through the middle that fades into a slightly fruity & almost herby/vegetal finish. Really nice!

Todd
Todd,
I really like this one! Really...I grew up on the central coast of California (the “other” wine country), and love oak on Chardonnay and beef cooked on grill with red coastal oak bark. I’m buying a bottle of this.

Ryan
Ryan,
I'm really liking this one. I got mostly apple on the nose, but clearly a very fresh and fruity scent. It's ultra smooth all the way through with lots of vanilla. I'm not usually one for oak, but it's really nice here. I did get a little hint of banana on the tail and it honestly weirded me out a little, but more as a novelty than a determent.

Christopher
Christopher,
Advent number 5. I enjoy whiskeys aged in other barrels, and this is not exception. Smooth.

The flavor spiral is pretty spot on. Lovely mouthfeel, with a lingering sweet finish with a hint of banana.

Michele

Nice ling finish.

Michelle

Vanilla, dark chocolate hints, toffee- but still a bit of the oakey bite. I enjoyed it!

Jesse
Jesse,
Nondescript and bland in my opinion

Kris
Kris,
Floral, fruity and toasted nuts on the nose. Light with surprisingly bright fresh taste and creamy.

Nicholas
Nicholas,
Strong balance - nothing too sweet on the palate which was nice. More of a dark coco and nut. But finish had some good mild sweetness to it. Good full dram

Frank
Frank,
(Advent 2020, #5) Some chocolate and vanilla in the nose. Tasting it you certainly get lots of oak, with some caramel & vanilla. The medium finish continues with the vanilla.

Andrew
Andrew,
Advent #5. Fudge and vanilla dominate the nose. Nice apple pie and oak notes. Enjoyable but I wouldn’t buy at $80

Bryan
Bryan,
Decent hints of toffee and vanilla but overall a little weak for a single malt
