It’s been called the "Best American Rye Whiskey" and it’s hard to argue.

Old Elk Distillery is not "just" another start-up operation in Colorado. Serial entrepreneur Curt Richardson launched the dream seven years ago in Colorado Springs. And he has his right-hand man — Luis Gonzalez — as CEO. They’re both great guys, but Curt knows that a successful business is built on the talent of the team, and that’s why he recruited Greg Metze who worked at… ahem, a certain prolific distillery in Indiana (what is now MGP) for thirty-eight years, rising to the position of master distiller. That’s a team you can build a company on, and the result demonstrates their success.

The first thing that you need to know is that Old Elk Straight Rye Whiskey is 95% rye. The rest is malted barley with the sole purpose to goose the fermentation process. This five year-old dram is a pure expression of the style. And it’s not just us that are saying it. This dram is a 96 point rated, Gold Medal-winning wonder that was called the "Best American Rye Whiskey" at the International Whiskey Competition. Bottled at 50% ABV, it has the Whiskey stones to stand up to whatever you throw into the glass.

A decade ago there were only 6 brands of Rye Whiskey hailing from Kentucky, nowadays there are more than 50!
George Washington famously loved his Rye Whiskey. In fact, after he served as the first president of the United States, he returned to his farm at Mount Vernon and started a small Rye distillery of his own.
The Richardson’s purchased a historic Windmill in Colorado called the Windsor Mill, in the hopes of restoring it. Before it could be renovated the mill was tragically destroyed by a fire.
Rye sparked the first revolution after the American Independence. It was called the Whiskey Rebellion, and it arose when the government tried to tax Whiskey and enforce the taxation on distillers. The lesson here? Don't mess with a Whiskey drinker's dram.
Rye - think of it as Bourbon's edgier cousin. It’s known for what many call a spicy or fruity flavor. Rye (distilled from at least 51% Rye) is not on the sweet side and tends to have a spicier body. That’s why the character of a cocktail made from Rye, instead of Bourbon, is drier.
Founded in 1998, the phone case empire Otterbox began it’s humble roots in the Richardson’s garage. The shatter proof water-proof invention is the beloved phone case for the outdoor enthusiasts.
