Japan on the rice.

There's a unique family-run distillery on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, near the source of the Kuma River, that was founded in 1872 and goes by the name Ohishi. We all know that the Japanese take their Single Malts seriously ― and so do we ― but this one is a special case. For starters, it's not a Single Malt at all, as it's made from rice! Where distilleries usually use malted barley, Ohishi uses Japan's favorite grain to create this superb cousin of Sake or Shochu. The 6th generation Master Distiller Kazunori Oishi doesn't settle for just any old type of rice either: apart from their own hinohikari rice they also use local mochi rice as well as organically-farmed gohyakumangoku, where koi carp are employed for weed control.

At Ohishi they love to play with aging and finishing, often employing various different barrels. These have included former Sherry, peated Scotch, and Brandy vessels. This particular Whisky was left to mature for 10 years in French oak Brandy barrels. The juice manages to retain its rice character throughout the process, making for a very special and uniquely Japanese dram

Tasting Notes

Appearance / Color
Gold

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The delightfully floral aroma wraps around notes reminiscent of Sake. There's prominent oak and fruit on the nose as well.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
It's a deep and complex one. The brandy-cask sweet fruit notes are obvious on the palate with green apples and pears especially prominent. The oak spice rounds it up nicely.

Finish
Finishes long with fruity, rice, and oak notes slowly fading.

James
James,
A very nice delicate whiskey. Nose is apple butter Taste is very delicate, very smooth. Faint apple & pear. Mild spice but no burn going down.A hint of vanilla. short-medium lived finish with oak coming through at the end I enjoyed this, but a bit too delicate for my taste to purchase a bottle.

Joel
Joel,
Wasn't sure what to expect here but was pleasantly surprised. If you like sake, give this a shot. Almost like a cross between a good sake and Scotch.

John
John,
Super smooth. Really tasty.

Tracy
Tracy,
So much happening on my tongue! First sip flavors have so much going on. The fruit, rice, marzipan and caramel are hitting my tongue at the same time. Pear and apple are right after that. The only whiskey I’ve had where I feel like a flavor story is going on in my mouth. Smooth with minimal to no burn. Aftertaste is the pear and rice.

Travis
Travis,
I’d call this unique and very complex with the flavor. Not like many other Japanese whiskeys I have tried. From a tasting box standpoint it was a cool one to try...whole bottle for over $75? Meh, probably not.

Ken
Ken,
Buttery mouth that's reasonably hot on swallow and throat. Nothing particular as far as taste. So so.

Caramel Apple, oak and pepper, doesn't sound like a great combination but worked well for me.

I was really looking forward to this one in the sample box but it tasted like gasoline finished with vanilla definitely disappointing

Light on the tongue, fine whiskey with tastes of apple and pear

Decent. Was tiny least favorite of the 3 I tried. Not worth the money in my opinion.

Such a great nightcap drink

Gregory
Gregory,
So so. A little spicy for me. I like the bite of a higher alcohol content. Not a fan of the rice base. I taste the apple, spice and oak.

Nicholas
Nicholas,
Can really feel the brandy throughout, as well as the rice whiskey creation, i get some sake vibes as well. Real apple brandy on the nose. Very fruity palate with a lightness that reminds me of the sake. Has a spicy kick throughout and a bit of an American whiskey spiciness finish.

Brian
Brian,
I don't care for this one, or at least it's not what I expected. Upon contemplation, it'd probably be awesome in a winter drink due to having a district holiday-spice character.

Jeff
Jeff,
Love the spice. Excited to explore more Japanese whiskey.

Timothy

Great flavor.

Tom
Tom,
Very floral

Michael
Michael,
I got this as a part of the tasting. I would like to try other rice whiskey. While this is not my favorite whisky, the spicy flavor is nice. I feel like the lower alcohol content helps this out. If the alcohol was higher than it would not be as nearly as good.
