Good old pre-Prohibition New Yorker Rye.

America was a fun place to be before the fun-hating people started the Prohibition, and one of the things one could hear in joyful saloons and hush-hush brothels was "ragtime." Ernest Hogan, Ben Harney, and Scott Joplin were household names and this lovely American Straight Whiskey is bringing back the syncopated rhythms and alluring harmonies. And it has to be Rye, because be it Lincoln or some Dust Bowl traveler, if you asked for a Whiskey cocktail, you got Rye Whiskey.

Now, New York Distilling bets on Rye grown in the New York State (most of the mix), corn and malted barley. They pour the potion into enormous 53-gallon American oak barrels and age it for three years until it's more than just perfect. This rich and intense Spirit can really handle any of the big names out there. But if we can make a suggestion, make Kings of Manhattan with Vermouth, Punt e Mes, Angostura and some orange bitters. Just don't forget to taste it straight first.

George Washington famously loved his Rye Whiskey. In fact, after he served as the first president of the United States, he returned to his farm at Mount Vernon and started a small Rye distillery of his own.
A decade ago there were only 6 brands of Rye Whiskey hailing from Kentucky, nowadays there are more than 50!
Rye - think of it as Bourbon's edgier cousin. It’s known for what many call a spicy or fruity flavor. Rye (distilled from at least 51% Rye) is not on the sweet side and tends to have a spicier body. That’s why the character of a cocktail made from Rye, instead of Bourbon, is drier.
During Prohibition there were over 50,000 illicit stills in New York City.
Rye sparked the first revolution after the American Independence. It was called the Whiskey Rebellion, and it arose when the government tried to tax Whiskey and enforce the taxation on distillers. The lesson here? Don't mess with a Whiskey drinker's dram.
