Very interesting. Don’t love it but it’s like nothing I’ve ever tasted. The fruit and candy really stand out at the finish.
Burt caramel and brown sugar on the nose. Very rich.
Smoke chocolate and caramel on the thick oily pallet.
Moderate length dry oak finish.
Gets better after the first couple of sips. Probably wouldn’t buy a bottle but would probably order it at a bar.
Nice and peaty for a Japanese one
Fantastic. Got this in a tasting box so only got a small sample, really wish I had the full bottle!
Sweet and peaty. Good combo
Vanilla. Smoke. Peat. Pepper. Starts light then spice sneaks up for a nice surprise.
Tastes like medicinal ass!
Very smooth drinking.
Nice balance of smokey peat, sweet-fruit, and subtle undertones (of...Chocolate? Vanilla? Pepper?). Great.
Rich palate. Smoky
smoke and smooth. i love japan.
If you look for a different drift on smokiness and peat, you just found a new travel mate. Balanced peat on nose with a quick and smooth vanilla start that finishes with a sweet after taste. Worth the trip!
Just wanted more of something....anything
Medium peat and smoke, caramel and vanilla with a slightly sweet taste. Overall a nice dram to enjoy.
Tasteful experience from de begininng. Fine caramel flavour came to my atention immediately. Overall nice complexion of flavours. Well done samurai!
Nose was medium peat, crisp, clear sweet. Taste is peatier. Would probably make a good intro to peat for first-timers.
Fruity splash to begin with,
then, blends of vainilla and cacao and final oakiness, with a peaty and smoky ostinato all the way.
Smooth and wondeful taste! Simply delicious.
If you like Laphroaig, you probably will find this too light. If you have never tasted peat, then may be a good start
Smooth n very woody flavor
Very nice! Smoky,
Very smooth. Vanilla, oak, and salty notes. Pleasant and quite complex
Beautiful blended. Very smooth and rich. We consider ourselves whisky snobs, and boy does this deliver. Bring it back, Flaviar!
Not as smooth as I would have hoped. For the price point, there are better peatier whiskeys. Probably wouldn’t buy a bottle of this outside of the tasting.
Golden brown, Perfect oily texture, heavy smoke without the peat finish. Vanilla creates a unique finish without much bite.
Its good but if you like peaty there are much better.
Smooth finish and aroma that stays on your nose
I got this through the Flaviar tasting set "Peat it, Peat it," and drank it after I had tasted the BRUICHLADDICH Octomore 08.3 Masterclass (currently the peatiest whisky in the world per marketing and ppm phenol count), which was just way too smokey for my palate at this point in my evolution of a whisky drinker. I'm usually a bourbon drinker so peat is pretty foreign to me. The Nikka Pure malt Black is distinctly peaty but not overwhelming. The smoke note is noticeable on the first taste and pops up on the finish as well. I found the smoke much less offensive and it made the sweeter/smoother flavors much more complicated and interesting. I am starting to see why the peatier whisky appeal to many people. If you aren't on board with peat yet, this may be a good place to start. And don't believe the part of the tasting set description that reads, "The Peat spectrum knowns no middle ground, and no mercy is spared on your palate..." There are clearly degrees of peatiness and this dram is testament to that.
Good mix of smoky and sweet. Not really for me though.
Spicier than I expected. Not personally enjoyable to me.
Enticing aroma - leather, smoke, peat, caramel. Didn't enjoy the flavor as much. I've never had Christmas cake, yet somehow that description makes sense to me for the flavor - fruity, dense, spicy. I'll stick with Islay malts with more smoke and peat, but this was enjoyable as something a little different.
I don't know, I didn't like this whisky. Tasted like it was raw, not finished at all. Disappointing.
Great aroma and great vanilla caramel taste. Slight slight smoke. Not too potent. Overall, one of my favorites.
It has a great oak taste
golden brown, tree sap color. Creamy vanilla and orange with apricot and Christmas spices. Not super peaty on the palate but spicy with notes of dehydrated apples. Lengthy finish with more lingering spice. Quite enjoyable and keeps the drinker entertained.
This one is a quite nice mix of smoke, peat and some sweeter tastes. A Whisky someone less into peaty ones might actually enjoy
Just really enjoy this dram, slightly peaty which finishes it off nicely, I generally like a peatier whiskey, but this is an easy drinker and highly recommended . 👌
A delightful dram with a wonderful nose, a smooth mouth and a medium finish. I was expecting more smoke, but the peat comes through in different ways. Rather than the smokiness of an Ardbeg or Lagavulin, the Nikka has more industrial notes like oil, diesel and metal, gently topped with a hint of caramel and vanilla. The sweet and the peat play very well together and make this a dangerously drinkable dram!
Nose: Gentle, sweet peat, dried fruits
Taste: dry, harsh - strong alcohol
Aftertaste: short and thin
Averige balance or complexity
very smooth with a slight vanilla and caramel aftertastes, wish it was available for purchase!
Solid. Nice and light. Very smooth!
Pleasant vanilla nose but the finish is a little too harsh for me. Wouldn't buy a full sized bottle.
Enjoyable, nothing too crazy but definitely worth a try. Very good if you're not sure what type of whisky you like and want to try something new.
Solid even flavor. Just a hint of peat to me, but enough to know it's there.
As another reviewer put it - very "balanced." Perhaps too balanced though... it's almost like they were playing it safe. I prefer a little more of a punch and spice in my scotch whiskys, but not bad.
A solid whiskey with a nice rounded taste and great character
