The story of Mount Gay Rum begins in the year 1703, on the Caribbean island of Barbados, when John Sober (seriously?!) inherited a distillery, and invited Sir John Gay to help manage it. Sir John Gay jumped at the opportunity to give the Barbadians something special. He refined the production process and began producing noticeably superior product that has survived to this day. Mount Gay is the oldest Rum brand in the World. A distillery with a 300-year tradition and Master Distiller Allen Smith at its helm. How can this expression go wrong? You’re right it cannot... and it didn’t.
MGXO is a fantastic blend consisting of a wide range of sassy Rums from 8 to 15 years of age, all of which were nursed in American White Oak ex-Kentucky Bourbon barrels. MGXO’s excellence was awarded many a time (e.g. Trophy at the 2001 International Spirits Challenge in London), but even though it is very highly regarded among Rum-inados, it’s still often overlooked by noobs who look for "premium" on the label... don’t be that guy. To covet or not to covet? Hmm… not really a tough nut to crack, is it?
The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Mount Gay XO Reserve Cask and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.
We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Smartass Corner
Rum (usually) comes from molasses, the sweet and syrupy residue of refining sugarcane into sugar. Molasses is over 50% sugar, but it also contains significant amounts of minerals and other trace elements, contributing to the final flavor.
Sweet and smooth dessert whiskey. The refreshing drink that is perfect for summer nights.
Stephen,
Extremely smooth, but the flavor is not strong.
Gregory,
it was so smooth and easy drinking FANTASTIC
Marieka,
It was decent rum, but a little sharper than I like and less flavor than other premium rums. Wouldn’t buy again.
Max,
Very sweet, almost Myers Dark sweet, but a very pleasant drink. While I wouldn't say this of most XO's this is a great mixer for standard Rum & Cokes or Tiki cocktails. A refined mixer.
Tamara,
Tasted like gasoline.
guest,
Vanilla, oak, brown sugar, and somewhat fruity aroma. Very dry and a little sharp. Flavor is more vanilla and wood and less brown sugar and fruit.
Trulawna,
Not Into dark liquor that much. Was strong on tongue. Not a fan too much but loved the experience.
William,
Phenomenal and fun to share with guests I want to impress.
Ross,
Bourbon and Gin guy but starting to dip my toes into more complex Rum's. This makes a great Daiquiri or nice on a rock. Love the spice and caramel notes. A very solid buy.
Clayton,
I bought this bottle from Flaviar with reward cash and it exceeded my expectations. This is exactly what I love in a sipping rum. The the caramel and clove flavors are prominent but not overpowering and it is so SMOOTH! As far as I’m concerned this is the best rum out there
Brendan,
Great nose of sweet cognac. Palate is drying with oaky/tannic finish. If you like whiskey, this one might be a good choice. More of a sipper than a mixer in my opinion.
guest,
Great if you are used to maybe bourbon or cognac. It is very good but not if your starting off...IMO. It can be dry with a strong oaky taste. There are subtle hints of vanilla and fruit but not overwhelming. I like it with coke as it becomes its own new thing. While it’s not my favorite right now (mostly because of price) it is still a good selection.
Jonathan,
This is my new favorite liquor. Great as a sipper, I wouldn't mix this with anything. Sweet, but not too sweet. I would compare this to higher end Irish whiskeys in terms of sweet character. Lots of coconut husk and tropical notes. Finishes with a bit of sweet vanilla. Really a fantastic pour.
Reuben,
Not your typical Rum; it's an easy sipper. The flavours are easily lost with mixers - use cheaper stuff for mixing!
Brandon,
Great XO. The sweet oaky, banana with a hint of vanilla on the back end. It’s a decent sipping rum but I think it excels in a Nicely balanced mixed drink due to the sweet mint aroma. It is on the sweeter side. It pairs very well with white grapefruit or cinnamon in cocktails.
Ian,
Goodness: this is an amazing rum. A prototypical sweet Bajan rum without strong overtones. Very slight note of vanilla (though not at all like a spiced rum). Would highly, highly recommend for the rum connoisseur.
Anderson,
A great sipping rum - I wouldn't mix it. It has a delightful nose and smooth, clean taste. It's sweet but not too heavy.
Andrew,
Instant vacation
Step 1) Pour over ice
Step 2) put on some soca music
Step 3) enjoy
Seth,
Tasty. Makes me want to wander around a white sand beach like a marooned pirate
John,
Smooth good for sipping
Rick,
This is becoming my go-to daily rum. I can get this at my local bottle shop for $40 and at that price is hard to beat. Love the ripe fruit and hints of dark brown sugar. Always a pleasure on the rocks with a lime wedge.
Joel,
My go to rum, tastes great neat, with ginger beer/cola or in cocktails
Hayden,
Well spiced. Takes me to an island when I taste it.
Vicky,
One of my favorite rums. Rich complex flavors.
Brandon,
Smooth and mildly sweet - some molasses flavor. I taste vanilla and some fruit like apricot. Very good - definitely one to get again
Regis,
Exceptionally smooth and balanced blend of aged rums. Superb to drink neat and delightful if mixed in a cocktail where the rum takes center stage.
Marty,
Has a strong fragrance. However it goes down very smooth. Great Rum mixed or not.
Would buy it again.
Dominic,
Great full body rum, very smooth. I love it on the rocks with a lime wedge.
Charlie,
Good rum. This is basically a tropical bourbon.
Raoul,
Just lovely, rich and aged
Vic,
It's a warm summer day, you want something refreshing, you're a rum lover, a little ice, a little lime . . . and Mount Gay . . . a MUST! It's a smooth, delicious rum you don't want to waste in a mixed drink.
Roger,
Its good, worth trying
Melville,
Wonderful
Steven,
Very nice rum. Tasty.
guest,
Good mixer
Michael,
This is a very complex rum. The mineral quality of the molasses definitely comes through, though the banana is a bit estery, not unlike the aroma of those penny candy store "balloon in a tube" novelties. If it weren't for the over-esteriness, I'd rate this quite high.
Jonathan,
That barrel aging worked out really well. There is a smoky undertone to the subtle flavors that linger on this richly bodied rum. I would not hesitate to purchase this.
