The history of McGuinness looks like a road map of Amsterdam… there are so many twists, turns and name changes that it’s hard to know the exact path you’ve traveled. All you really know is where you are now. And where they are now is a subsidiary to Canadian spirits giant Corby Spirit and Wine Limited. McGuinness does one thing and one thing only, and they’ve been doing it for a very long time... They produce a wide range of Canadian style Whiskies, and from time to time, they release some special editions too.

McGuinness Old Canada Whisky is a straightforward Canadian style Rye Whisky, but it has been aged a bit longer than most. Old Canada is aged 8 years, and they re-use barrels again and again. Some of the casks are very old indeed, but all of them start as American white oak, ex-Bourbon casks. They then blend the Whiskies across their distilleries, barrels and batches.

As you might imagine, that brings a lot of consistency to the operation. And that’s exactly the point. The Old Canada bottle you buy today will taste just like the one you bought last year. Achieving this kind of consistency is not as easy as you might think... and they use a lot of science and old school craftsmanship to get there. All of that makes McGinness Old Canada a sentimental favorite among their hometown fans.

The Hiram Walker’s Distillery was one of the key suppliers during Prohibition, with Al Capone being one of their biggest customer. Records show Capone paid $7 for a case of Canadian Club and sold it in the US for $75.
The saviour from the North. After the Prohibition, Canada was there for its American friends with the only barrels of aged Whisky around, and they made a killing.
