― This was excellent. My buddy and I did a wheated bourbon blind tasting with: (1) Weller Special Reserve; (2) Weller Antique 107; (3) Markers Mark 101; & (4) Jefferson's Ocean Voyage 22 (wheated mash bill). The ultimate objective was to rate the 4 based on taste (assuming all whiskey is free). Both of us had the EXACT SAME ranking: (1) Makers 101; (2) Weller Antique 107; Weller Special Reserve; and (4) Jefferson's Voyage 22. Makers 101 and Weller Antique 107 were pretty close in flavor profile. However, Maker 101 had a better scent that was easier for me to pick up on than say the Antique 107. ZERO ethanol was picked up in the smell, taste, and finish of Makers 101. Nose: caramel, toasted oak, semi-sweetness; Palate: oak and spice come together at the outset with a slight transition away from the sweetness on the nose. What a wonderful mouthfeel. Creamy and mouth coating. I got a nice hint of pealed apple skin, slight char plus caramel. The marriage of spice, oak, and caramel was awesome! THe finish was also enjoyable with cinnamon, oak, and caramel. Similar to regular makers, but more pronounced and not as thin (though I love regular makers too). For the price, this is really unbeatable. What a great idea to have a Makers Mark less watered down! Flavor certainly increases. Weller 107 is good too, but Makers 101 is better (even if all whiskey was free). I really encourage people to do blind tastings with an objective mindset. Often times people get too caught up in the marketing, supply and demand games, and focus too much on what the experts say. At the end of the day, whiskey drinking is personal to you. Makers 101 gets 10 stars from me! It will be a STAPLE in my collection.
